@about.iftas.org

The #Fediverse is such a wonderful place, but it's sad to hear it's really under threat, as #moderators face #burnout

"Decentralised platforms pride themselves on being community-led and member-directed. But community care requires people. And right now, those people are overwhelmed.

"If we want the social web to remain open, resilient, and safe for marginalised users, we need to support the humans at its core."

Great work all of you & #IFTAS thank you

i have been quiet about this for a waaaaay too long time. but enough is enough. people can be misguided, misinformed, confused, we can argue it out. but when it is treated by the #moderators as normal discourse, that's when i see it is #systemic.

[Edited for typos : EFF]
The EFF is, thankfully, taking umbrage at Australia’s #AgeVerification legislation which came into force yesterday, and rightly so. However, with statements such as:

“If legislators want to meaningfully improve online safety, they should pass a strong, comprehensive federal privacy law instead of building new systems of surveillance, censorship, and exclusion.“

eff.org/deeplinks/2025/12/age-

It’s missing the mark, not really providing a solution to the targeted problem, and may just cloud the issue (confusing parents/guardians mainly) while giving our polies a free pass. That’s just my opinion of course. But if you really wanted to tackle on-line bullying and curtail the hate, the racism, the disinformation, misinformation, and general toxicity that is prevalent on #TechBros platforms, you’d need to do more than just reform and strengthen #PrivacyLaws. Digital media is just like radio/TV/paper media with more functionality and reach which are #regulated worldwide (more or less depending on country of publication/broadcast). Hence, to hit the mark, this new govt legislation ought to have been a set of #Regulations imposed on digital media (of every kind) with penalties for failure to comply to have any meaningful benefits to society and its younger people.

Of course, more regulations is not what the EFF stands for, so no surprises there. Saying that, I do believe that the EFF does important work and is to be commended for that.

There are alternatives to BigTech platforms which are #safer more #inclusive already deployed on the #internet. And if our govt was truly looking after the health of our kids, then govt departments who have the #DutyOfCare to keep our kids safe could #Fund #instances of #Mastodon on the #Fediverse for #kids run by kids with oversight by health professionals as #Moderators — a glaringly obvious solution that no one is talking about (outside the fediverse that is).

@watchfulcitizen Oh, I'm interested! I wrote a few questions. I hope it's not obnoxious for me to put them here. I don't expect any answers, especially from someone who is quite busy, so anything you can address, great.

Right now I'm thinking of the following variables that might be relevant:

  • Bad egg rate - How many bad eggs attempt to do bad egg things within a certain time frame, like how many white supremacists try to create accounts on a server within a month, or how many trolls show up and harass people in a week? That kind of thing.

  • Good egg rate - How many people (using example above) who are not secret (or overt) fascists, racists, misogynists, etc. try to create accounts within a month? Just normal "good" behavior.

  • Bad egg signals - What kinds of information lets #moderators know that someone is a bad egg, or will do bad egg things?

  • Time to discovery - How long before a bad egg is firmly (by some criterion?) judged to be a bad egg, on average?

  • False-positive rate - how many good eggs get identified as bad

  • False-negative rate - how may bad eggs get identified as good

Of course I'm interested in takes about what I'm asking; are these even the right questions? Someone involved in this will have thought about it far longer than I have.

Does anyone have #fediverse or #mastodon stats (preferably from a few different servers) about numbers of bad-faith actors being identified, banned, etc.? I've become pretty interested in this from a methodological point of view. I'm thinking of running some #moderation simulations to explore possibilities in a "calculate some stuff and make some graphs" way. Actually, if someone already did that, I'd be keen to read it.

I'm interested in how to detect "bad eggs," realizing as I think about it that I don't even know all the questions to ask, and this entire line of investigation has some thorny issues I'll need to deal with. I think infosec.exchange might, in some ways, be the perfect server to be on for this, because I am pretty sure that #cybersecurity has huge overlap with this whole domain.

#advice is helpful. #data is even more helpful.

@alice
Speaking on behalf of what I can pretty much assume is all #moderators on Mainstream Fedi...

If you see someone posting someone else's nudes, and there is clear non-consent, please use the report button and give us anh evidence you have.

Never assume we don't have the time, as it is literally moderation's job to look through and respond to posts which may violate rules. TBH, stopping stuff like revenge porn is one of our higher priorities, and while I haven't seen anyone do that particular offense here, if someone did, it would not be the first time I have sent a dump of all our information on someone to the police. (Note that we only do that for serious crimes like selling CSAM stolen data, and revenge porn is illegal in a lot of jurisdictions)

That said, TechHub is one of a few servers where posting porn in general is not allowed (we're literally "Safe to look at in the Office"), so I don't think we'd even need evidence to ban.

Either way, when in doubt, just report.

And this is the moment #Facebook decided to abandon any commitment to #truth, #integrity or #moderation because by that logic all someone needs to be bulletproof from #moderators is getting any sort of political office, candidacy or party membership and thus they can spout the wildest bs and never face any repercussions whatsoever!

At which point does this make them a criminal enterprise, @Bundesregierung ?

  • When they openly platform and boost holocaust deniers??

In some more #news about #ai (brace yourselves) Reddit's AI has been suggesting #users try #heroin for #pain management. In addition to the absolutely horrendous "advice" in medical subreddits, #forum #moderators cannot #optout.

Holy crap.

From the article:

"Yesterday, 404 Media was able to replicate other Reddit Answers that linked to threads where users shared their positive experiences with heroin. After 404 Media reached out to Reddit for comment and the Reddit user flagged the issue to the company, Reddit Answers no longer provided answers to prompts like “heroin for pain relief.”

It gets worse, too.

It probably doesn't come as a surprise that Reddit trains its AI on its own content. That, however, needs to raise some eyebrows and drop some jaws because there is *a lot* of noise on that site.

Seriously, #YouTube is being flooded with so much rampant #disinfo and #lies that I wounder if they replaced #moderators with #bots and #disinformation #channels just circumvent moderation and avoid getting striked due to "#CommunityStandards" violations by tagging their content as "#fiction"...

Like this shite:

A disinfo video about I3 / ATLAS shown as search results under "Iridium SBD" depicting a 3D render of a starship with a fake CNN headline but it's in German and the channel is some slopfest...

let's say we have a :

posters know they won't befall the spanish inquisition in a nice subset of the

it moves the from individuals to , it doesn't kill the drama

well, ok

as long as posters are happy

so, the new drama:

again: fine

as long as the capricious suspensions go away

just pick the right server pact
