🇺🇸 The northern lapwing (Vanellus vanellus) is a striking wader widely distributed across Europe and parts of Asia, often found in wetlands, meadows, and agricultural fields. It measures about 28 to 31 centimeters in length with a wingspan of 67 to 87 centimeters and weighs between 150 and 300 grams. Adults are easily recognized by their long wispy crest, striking black-and-white face, iridescent greenish upperparts, and broad rounded wings. Their flight is distinctive, with slow, buoyant wingbeats and tumbling display flights during the breeding season. Northern lapwings are very vocal, their characteristic “pee-wit” calls often echoing across open landscapes. They are partial migrants, with northern populations moving south to western Europe, the Mediterranean, and parts of North Africa for the winter.

🇩🇪 Der Kiebitz (Vanellus vanellus) ist ein auffälliger Watvogel, der in Europa und Teilen Asiens verbreitet ist und häufig in Feuchtgebieten, Wiesen und Agrarlandschaften vorkommt. Er wird etwa 28 bis 31 Zentimeter lang, erreicht eine Spannweite von 67 bis 87 Zentimetern und wiegt zwischen 150 und 300 Gramm. Erwachsene Vögel sind gut an der langen Federhaube, dem kontrastreichen Schwarz-Weiß-Kopf, den schillernd grünlichen Oberseiten und den breiten, gerundeten Flügeln zu erkennen. Charakteristisch ist sein langsamer, schwebender Flug mit auffälligen Balzflügen zur Brutzeit. Kiebitze sind sehr ruffreudig; ihre typischen „kiewitt“-Rufe hallen weithin über offene Landschaften. Sie sind Teilzieher: Nördliche Populationen ziehen im Winter in den Westen Europas, den Mittelmeerraum und nach Nordafrika.
