Sharing a monologue I recorded for USC's 20th Anniversary Conference on Dams in which I reflect on how have been both a blessing and a curse in American West, & how shifts in amid warming will further accentuate that duality.

Speleothems, or dripstones, are excellent climate archives because the chemical composition of the calcium carbonate in speleothems changes with the climatic conditions above the cave. (photo/©: Hubert Vonhof)

“Py3DEP is a part of [PyGeoUtils] HyRiver software stack that is designed to aid in hydroclimate analysis through web services. This package provides access to the 3DEP database which is a part of the National Map services. The 3DEP service has multi-resolution sources and depending on the user-provided resolution, the data is resampled on the server-side based on all the available data sources. Py3DEP returns the requests as xarray dataset…”

Thrilled to have been included on this paper led by Niamh Cahill. We propose a #Bayesian time series model for catchment scale #hydroclimate reconstructions. The paper makes use of the Palaeowise database of Australasian #climate proxy data (the first paper to use the database 🙌) onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10

I'm very happy that this paper that Ulf Büntgen and I wrote together has finally come out. Using annually resolved #hydroclimate data we found that central Europe experienced increasingly dry summers from the 420 to the 450s CE (and beyond). This coincided with some of the most devastating raids by #Huns on #Roman territory. We argue that Huns used raiding as a buffering strategy to mitigate against dry summers which made it harder for them to pasture their herds. cam.ac.uk/research/news/drough

After a statistical crisis Friday afternoon and a weekend of work, I can replicate ALL of my results and my reconstruction is back on track. Now, time to take a break to play the new #Pokemon game. #paleoclimate #climate #geoscience #treering #hydroclimate #volcano #Atlantic
