TLDR: I explain some of the technical aspects and inspirations in my fresh Hypnopomp EP for curious minds.

I can say it's Flashcore, associated with “Hangar Liquides” label: experimental avant-garde side of #speedcore/hardcore(?). But I don’t want to limit it with genres because there is so much going on with sound design.

Some tracks are based on my past microsound works that I developed with Max/MSPor other times finding my own grains/particles with DAW editing limitations. The opening track “Pyrocumulus II” is an example for this: harsh DSP kicks built onto a former track I made 10 years ago with a 4-second recording of me making a popcorn. This was in my ambient album CloudScapes where each track’s named after a rare cloud ( @c.reider, there is a track called Lenticularis also!).

Then the 2nd track involves a hand-made tool that I call “Freakbox”: it generates funnyrectangular waves. With speedcore transients with FM and bitcrushed samples and saturation.

Inspirations include indeed some works from abovementioned La Peste’s label, DIY labels like Cathartic Noize Experience, Ikeda, pioneers like Xenakis and Else Marie Pade, ae's overall catalog but specifically elseq 1-5, and underground dance floors especially with Equinox (Marlon Sterling) running the #scientificwax label: Also inspiring is the way some of these figures approach music, which helps me build and develop my own further.

The sound sculpting possibilities for bass, drums, pads and more are blowing my mind.

I want to put it on everything. It also plays nicely with my #distortion explorations with my #ShermanikFilterbank preset.

Here's a little beat that I cooked up as I ponder the world.

Dry at the start, DubSub comes in first on the bass and then my Shermanik Filterbank is added by 00:33. Filterbank drops back at 01:10, and ramps to full intensity at 01:30.

There's MackEQ on the bass drum and the whole drum set is being run through Tube and VerbTiny. The whole mix is then run through Tube again with a Peak Limiter to keep things in check.

Im United Plugins Lofinity Test erfährst du, was das neue Lo-Fi-Werkzeug wirklich kann und ob die 100 Effekte nicht nur von Quantität statt Qualität zeugen. Es kommt aber noch besser: Mit etwas Glück kannst du dir schon bald selbst einen Eindruck von Lofinity verschaffen, denn es gibt drei Lizenzen zu gewinnen!

Lo-Fi-Tools sind gewiss keine Neuheit mehr. Seit dem Hype um das Genre gibt es mehr als genügend Plug-ins, die Tonhöhenfluktuationen, Analogknistern und Co. emulieren. Allerdings sind viele davon so ausgelegt, dass sie einen möglichst angenehmen Klang erzeugen. Lofinity von United Plugins beziehungsweise JMG Sound schlägt einen anderen Weg ein: zwar sind auch die typischen Klänge und Vintage-Charaktere möglich, allerdings können auch digitale Glitches, Kratzer und dergleichen erzeugt werden. Somit lassen sich auch defekte Abspielsysteme oder Störungen früher Videospielkonsolen simulieren – a perfect imperfection, würde man im Englischen sagen.

Ob sich das Tool wirklich von der Konkurrenz abheben kann und mit diesem Ansatz überhaupt nützlich ist, habe ich im Test herausgefunden.

Color Theory: What’s the deal with the palettes I’m using?

Following a recent conversation, I wanted to write this blog to add some final pieces of context to my current interest in color palettes.

Binary Numbers

The Binary Numbers project was changed earlier this year following Trump’s inauguration. The original was inspired by simple musings on Data as Art. It was updated again in 2014 after the work had stalled due to technical reasons. I increased the complexity of the images, and incorporated Heritage Color Palettes.

But the end of last year and the beginning of this were exhausting. Two months were spent in protest:

But it seems that this alone was not able to tear the wheels off a tanker in Tienanmen Square… and so I decided on something uplifting. For myself, and for the viewer.

Cinema Palettes was a fantastic Twitter account that takes a scene (not necessarily iconic) from a film and analyses the scene’s colors, presenting back to us, the palette used.

I had been following it for a while and I became curious as to what I might be able to do with it in the configuration of my Binary Numbers.

And so from January this year I adapted the Cinema Palettes concept into this work starting with 50 new color palettes.
