Is #YouTube reducing the average bitrate on 1080p videos for non-Premium users? I always hear about compression artefacts but rarely noticed them, until recently.
You'd think higher compression is good for #EnergyEfficiency. The impact of delaying the expansion of networking hardware is hard to assess. Energy spent on client-side decoding and new client hardware probably dominates.

Tout juste avant le premier confinement de Covid, j'ai acheté un Mac mini usagé. Un modèle "late 2014", processeur i5, 16 Go de mémoire, 1 To de stockage. Devenu lent après une malheureuse mise à jour de MacOS, j'ai décidé de le passer à #Ubuntu (Jammy Jellyfish) 22.04, il y a deux ans environ. Amélioration instantanée de performance.
Je viens de terminer la mise à jour à 24.04 Noble Numbat ce matin. Tout roule encore mieux! Une machine qui a 10 ans!

Note that Googlebot very much fails to pay attention to cacheing signals for #RSS files, and Google-Podcast* pays no attention at all to any of these signals. Please fix.

In #Bielefeld laufen die Vorbereitungen auf die große #LinuxInstallParty (Samstag 15 Uhr in den @acmelabs) auf Hochtouren: 30 USB-Sticks wurden mit jeweils gut 50 Gigabytes GNU/Linux befüllt.
Die Fotos zeigen unsere USB-Stick-Kopiermaschine (vielen Dank fürs Ausleihen, @phillo!) und einen der Sticks im Betrieb. Den 64-GB-Stick könnt ihr zum Materialpreis (5€) mit nach Hause nehmen.
Wozu das Ganze? Damit ihr selbst erleben könnt, dass in euren alten Laptops noch viel Leben steckt, wenn ihr sie mit Linux statt Windows betreibt. In anderen Worten: Steigt von Windows 10 nicht auf Windows 11, sondern auf GNU/Linux um und behaltet eure Hardware, statt neue zu kaufen!

Not so long ago I watched a lecture about #GreenComputing (https://youtu.be/U0LwObfvCus?si=hC6-dNt9Idp0TDuA but it's in Czech) and learned that the carbon footprint of manufacturing and distribution of #hardware is huge and vastly overshadows reduction from better efficiency that new HW can bring, so the greenest choice you can do is to buy #refurb s and focus on HW that will last.
The lecture focuses on compute servers, but I bet it's true for any area of computing.
