A low gray overcast fills most of the sky. A thin slice of clearing along the horizon is letting a little bit of pale orange sunset color through. Standing at the edge of a dormant marsh that forms one shore of a small beaver pond. Both marsh and pond are encircled by a forest of leafless hardwoods with a few evergreens mixed in. The marsh is predominantly carpeted with water grass and clumps of sedge, both golden brown and dormant, with channels of calm water curling through. A few small trees are scattered throughout, most of them dead trunks left behind by the voracious beavers. There is a thicker scattering of low shrubs with leafless branches. Straight ahead a few feet away a small clump of otherwise dormant sedge is topped with new shoots of brilliant emerald green, the first touch of the vibrant spring about to transform the drab scenery.

#WaterWednesday. For some reason, the meltwater on the pond ice has formed a little river.

Theories: 1) The ice buckled down last week while freezing and expanding; 2) The ice fractured on a line and water from below is seeping through.

A frozen pond. The ice has a gray, slushy surface after 2 warm days. Parallel to the pond bank there is a narrow strip of water on top of the ice. The water reflects the blue sky and the willows on the far side.

Astor is getting stuck in the ice and might need some help!
