Since my last years resolutions went so well (I could tick off one out of eight...), here are my New Years resolutions 2026:
- #triathlon: train accordingly to finish #AlpeDHuez triathlon
- #LRC radio operator exam: learn for and pass the exam, ideally in the first quarter of the year
- #sailing: this is twofold: 1. Swiss lakes sailing and promote the sailing community, 2. buying a ocean going boat if there is a good opportunity, in preparation for taking early retirement
- #downsizing: also, in preparation for taking early retirement
- #freediving course: get my shit together and convince my brain I'm not going to die by breathholding for 45s
- learning #English / #French: study diligently for 15 min daily

@bmv 😂 Sorry, wie verzerrt kann ein Weltbild sein?! Die (Nicht-)Arbeit und (Minder-)Leistung der Beteiligten ist nicht nur Grund für den schlechten Zustand und die Dauer-Hindernisse auf den Autobahnen, sondern das Konzept ist total kaputt. Selbst wenn die baulichen Zustände besser wären, sitzen in jedem übermotorisierten, übergroßen PKW nur 1,3 Personen und die Straßen werden als großes Schnelldreherlager genutzt. Für sowas kann man sich nicht feiern.

Two more #movies that I've just watched on #Tubi that I think are also worth watching:

1) #Driveways (2020) co-starring #HongChau, the petite tough talking Asian woman (who ate Matt Damon for lunch in #Downsizing in 2017) & #BrianDenehey (who plays out of type as a soft spoken & empathetic retired vet). The central character is a young socially awkward boy (Hong Chau's son) who attaches himself to the retiree. More generally it's about growing old, dying & how life goes on nonetheless.

2) #Learning to Drive (2014) co-starring #PatriciaClarkson & #BenKingsly. Is focused on a middle aged White woman who is trying to cope with getting dumped by her husband for a younger woman & an East Indian man who is her driving teacher. However, more broadly, the movie is about how "learning to drive" is a metaphor for how the women needs to get her life back together & how doing so also helps her teacher cope with learning to relate to a woman he just met in an arranged marriage.

Weekly Update from the Open Journal of Astrophysics – 15/11/2025

It’s Saturday again, so it’s time for the usual update of the week’s new papers at the Open Journal of Astrophysics. It has been quite a busy week. Since the last update we have published another seven papers, which brings the number in Volume 8 (2025) up to 175, and the total so far published by OJAp up to 410.

First on the menu for this week is “Dynamical friction and measurements of the splashback radius in galaxy clusters” by Talia M. O’Shea (U. Wisconsin-Madison, USA), Josh Borrow & Stephanie O’Neil (U. Pennsylvania, USA) and Mark Vogelsberger (MIT, USA). Published on Tuesday 11th November in the folder Cosmology and NonGalactic Astrophysics, this one presents a study suggesting that dynamical friction does not play a major role in reducing the radius of the splashback feature in real data compared to numerical simulations.

anyone who is 70+ in their own home who has ever moved in the past, might find the price difference between a 4 bed 2 bath residence and a 1 or 2 bed 1 bath residence is not enough to cover the cost of stamp duty if they downsize to the same area (not even the same suburb) — in which case, they cannot afford to downsize.
