Companies aren't using the gains to do more with their same staff... they're firing huge swaths. I'm not suddenly getting a ton of new features & apps & robot maids.... instead my friends are jobless.
His company is at the same risk as #StackOverflow but he has the money, reputation & connections to pivot into a new business if he wants.
Our industry is being gutted before we've even begun to see the true invoices for these #AI tools arrive.
They say that #StackOverflow is dead because of ChatGPT. I highly doubt it.
I'm also launching the bottle here. I am trying to implement a well known algorithm in #rust. However, I encounter a problem because of the ownership mechanism which is specific to Rust.
I tried to wrap my head around it but I've had no other solution than to use unsafe rust tools on the one hand, and I couldn't find a solution to use rayon to make it parallel on the other hand.
I gave ChatGPT a try, it failed miserably because... this is rare case and it does not consider the specifics of ownership. Its solution are basically "Your solution should work. Oh you got an error from the compiler? The compiler is wrong. It will work."
So anyway here is my question and my code: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/79879277/removing-unsafe-pointer-and-make-vector-element-comparison-parallel
npmjs.com anyone? Slow as hell. Same for stackoverflow sites.❓
The Enclosure feedback loop
or how LLMs sabotage existing programming practices by privatizing a public good
I used to like #StackOverflow even though everybody now tells me it's "toxic" and "dead for good". I can cope with high quality standards sometimes hurting egos (including mine) but I got some great solutions there and also contributed knowledge.
But it seems it really degraded. My last two questions were downvoted without comment and silently removed from the platform for whatever reason. No comment, nothing. Were my questions so stupid? Or did the downvoters fail to understand? I'll never find out.
If StackOverflow want to save their platform they should disallow downvoting without a comment, that really sucks.
For most of my courses, I provide some test scripts so students can verify that their solutions are correct. Usually, these scripts emit a score or grade at the end.
The issue I was facing was that if an assignment had multiple test scripts, the grader (normally a TA) would have to manually parse the output of the tests and add up the scores.
To automate this, I decided to... embed a Python script in the Makefile I provide students to do run the test suite. This embedded Python script runs all the individual test scripts, extracts the score and status, and then summarizes the overall grade based on different weights.
It's ugly and looks terrible, but it works :}
I have embedded Python in shell scripts before, but this was the first time I have done this in a Makefile. It works by defining the shell script as a macro in the Makefile and then exporting. For the recipe, simply run `python3 -c $$NAME_OF_MACRO`.
I would hazard to guess that there is a limit to how long the embedded script can be (ie. the max length of the command line arguments)... but this will do.

#stackoverflow ist manchmal einfach zum Kotzen. Da wird eine Frage einfach als duplicate gesetzt, aber die angebliche Originalfrage löst mein Problem einfach nicht.

Because JavaScript is so prolific, it’s a prime target for attackers.
My first experience using AI coding assistants, which left a deep imprinting, was asking Microsoft Copilot a question, and it giving me a very confident answer citing my own still unanswered question I asked on Stack Overflow half an hour earlier.
Can someone hint me at a way to disable #Safari on #macOS and #iOS to automatically focusing on and bringing into view the first form field there is on any website? i.e. #StackOverflow automatically and all the times is scrolled to the end of the page because there is a stupid login form.
// Is this a @1password issue?
My biggest irritation with #StackOverflow, and apparently I’m far from alone, are discussions relevant to me that are shut down for being duplicates, but the original question either wasn’t relevant or the discussion went off in directions not relevant to my problem when the duplicate question‘s thread was promising.

Geeks Are Sexy: Stack Overflow Is Dead, Long Live Its Training Data. “The numbers are brutal. Monthly questions have collapsed from more than 200,000 in 2014 to just 3,862 in December 2025. The reason is obvious: 84% of developers now use AI coding assistants. Turns out people prefer instant answers over being publicly shamed for forgetting a semicolon.” I tried Stack Overflow once. ONCE. It […]

@zenspider why? Because of stolen content or AI slop? Claude, Gemini 3 and ChatGPT 5 and the new agentic development systems feel like a turning point, a creative disruption which changes the entire world of software engineering. #Stackoverflow is already dying. These systems have already reached senior level and beyond. They surpass us in many aspects. They will not go away if we ignore them.
Keď je #StackOverflow takmer mŕtvy, na čom sa teraz budú trénovať LLM? Či nebudú proste poznať nové technológie, ich problémy a ako ich vyriešiť?
People maintaining online forums: have you noticed a reduction in post frequency during the last year?
I recently saw the attached graph for #stackoverflow which made me wonder about a #Discourse forum I maintain. By looking at our stats, I see that there were very few posts after March 2025.
I read about the potential impact of #LLM on other platforms like #wikipedia and I'm now wondering whether people now ask LLMs for help so post frequency is decreasing?
Have you noticed such changes?
