My amazing partner got me a beautiful old mechanical/clockwork clock for Christmas!

Torsion spring needs to be winded up once a week, which makes it even cooler. No batteries included (needed!).

the #clockwork #devterm still (3 years) has no OS you can actually use, it is my best looking paper weight

So, initial thoughts so far on the Clockwork uConsole:
- The trackball is pretty bad, would classify it as barely functional.
- Wifi does not work which severely limits things...maybe an antenna problem? Verified it was securely installed on the CM4 module.
- Install isn't bad, very solid device.
- The thermal pad for the RPi CM4 is waaaay too thick.

It operates on a pared-down system that relies on a stepper motor, driving planetary movement through a 0.8 mm axle nested inside a 1 mm brass tube. That micro-mechanical coupling, aided by a couple of bevel gears, manages to rotate the Moon just right, including its orientation.

Most of the movement relies on clever design, not gear cascades. The real wizardry happens under the hood: a 3D-printed chassis cradles an ESP32-C6, a TTP223 capacitive touch module, STSPIN220 driver, and even a reed switch with magnetic charging.

👾You can even swap out the brass for a stone shell where the full moon acts as the touch control. It’s tactile, it’s poetic and therefore, a nice hack for a weekend project.👾

Last night I started reading The Clockwork Dynasty by Daniel H Wilson and it's really neat. The basic premise seems to be taking the real historical accounts of automata and going "what if they were as alive as these historical figures describe them to be?" And then weaving together an alternate history that fits into our own real world history

I picked it up from the #library when aimlessly wandering the #scifi section after stopping in to print a document and the #clockwork themed font on the spine caught my eye

[New Note] - I received my #clockwork #uconsole 2 weeks ago, but because I was sick and then had to travel for work, I haven’t been able to play with it since I got it…

My short term goals:

* Install debian bookworm
* Encrypt only my home directory (I think full encryption might be to harsh for micro sd card)
* Install emacs, syncthing and git so I can write and publish from it
* Install some retro gaming (best rpg games were made for SNES anyway!)

What I don’t know is what am I going to do with the keyboad layout. Normally I’m an azerty user. And even on my Dogma Raise 2 that has qwerty keycaps, I have it setup to azerty as I don’t care and don’t look. But the layout of the uconsole is so special that changing it might mean I’ll struggle a lot to find some special keys… So I’m still perplex at this stage about that.
