Might have played with Basilisk II running Mac 7 & 8 this weekend. So fun! #Macintosh #BasiliskII #68kMac #ClassicMac

So MapClassic does run on macOS 9 through 68k emulation. No color icons it seems, so I'll look into that.

v1 will release without color in the maps though. I'll see what to do and whether it's realistic to maintain both a CodeWarrior project and a THINK C project. I still want to primarly develop it on the SE/30.

there's still some work left to do, but MapClassic is pretty usable. I expect a 1.0 release this month. Still need to test system 6, performance, and add color icons.

Last screenshot is the same map rendered by the modern Map renderer. The placements are a bit different because of the font sizes, but otherwise pretty much the same.

#Macstodon now runs in the latest bleeding-edge build of the Snow emulator! And if you use Snow's built-in HTTPS stripping, then you don't have to configure WebOne or another proxy, just install Macstodon and start using it 😎

Thanks @twvd for the FPU fixes and all the other hard work you put into Snow! This is the kick-in-the-pants I need to get the next version of Macstodon out the door 🙂

Has anyone thought about doing a Linux distribution that basically boots into a classic mac emulator in full screen, with maybe some proxies for web access and I/O running locally? Something like infinite mac, but locally.

This would be user friendly and probably quite fast.
You could probably store most of all existing classic mac software locally.

Any online #GlobalTalk DropBoxes today I could connect to received two greets via the #ACMS AppleTalk network.

One was from me testing out the freeware (black and white) version of Kid Pix from the Classic Mac Survival Kit (which I grabbed from that share on the WOzFest HQ zone), the other was an earlier text-only one from a couple of young visitors to the Museum.

Ben and Lucas, probably about 14-15yo, were suitably impressed (or at least pleasantly polite enough to appear suitably impressed) as I described just what #GlobalTalk was about, and the geographical spread of nodes online today.

I hadn’t yet located Kid Pix and due to time limitations and networking stability issues due to power circuit tripping while they were there, they only got to drop their greet in @billgoats’s Founding Node’s DropBox, so when everything was more settled later in the day after they’d left, I dropped their greet along with mine in any available DropBoxes, which they had intended to do.

They very generously donated $20 between them to the ACMS and promised to visit again. Lucas already has a Windows 9x PC he was gifted by a relative he is looking forward to getting working on, so it’s nice to see yet another generation engaging with old tech.

Speaking of Windows 9x, someone vandalised the running Acer Windows machine not far from the Macs I was working on – investigations continue to identify the perpetrator 🥸

Absolutely about to lose it, but am somehow going to write this absent any swears.

None of the following can apparently be made to work using resources available today unless you want to go digging in the brains of the Terminal, using commands—by the way—that no longer work on Apple Silicon because all of the path references have changed:

* Built-in Mac OS File Sharing
* AppleTalk or AFP (including Netatalk)
* SMB
* Even FTP (including via Homebrew options, FileZilla Server, etc.)

I have tried them all. Both Perplexity and ChatGPT have insisted that all of the above can be made to work, then finally admit after lengthy sessions they do not and that they were relying on old information. When confronted with the fact that I provided them with all of the specific details they needed to give accurate responses in my very first query, the “AI” has the gall to apologize but makes it clear that it has not learned anything from the interaction.

For more than three decades, Apple's image has been grounded in “it just works." Well, the simplest thing possible in computer networking—being able to access and edit the same plain text file from two different machines—does not work, and there is no way for an average technophile to make it work.

It's absolutely preposterous, disgusting, and inexcusable.

Anyone have a lead on a straightforward resource on networking a Tahoe Mac with my old OS 9.2 PM G4?

I’ve tried setting up both an FTP server and Netatalk on the modern Mac using directions provided by AI and both failed miserably.

There must be a quality video or web page with detailed, failproof step-by-step instructions, but I can’t find one.

🪨 HyperCard on the Macintosh 🛠️

The "software erector set" that launched careers and an entire industry, and came tantalizingly close to delivering us the world wide web 6 years early. Our last post of 2025 takes a deep look at this important title. I also muse a bit on the approach HyperCard takes in extending the definition of what it means to develop software. Happy holidays!

Getting System 7.5 natively booting on a G4 Mac is impressive enough…

...but what truly blows my mind is that on the same hardware, the author managed to get System 6.0.8 as far as a Happy Mac, and Systems 7.0/7.1 to a "not supported on this computer" dialog.

The fact that the ROM manages to get that far at all, instead of a black screen or sad mac is bonkers, considering that the processor architecture (and the rest of the hardware) is completely different from anything that would be understood by that era of OS. It's relying on the 68k emulator built-in to the ROM.

Driver support notwithstanding, I wonder how low could you go if you took the resources from the CHRP system enabler and brought them over into the System file directly? Since 6.x and early 7.x didn't support enablers.

How is it m68k Macs came to have a reputation for superior stability relative to Windows PC's of the era, despite the limits of classic MacOS's memory manager? How much was clever marketing and how much was reality?
