Just before the ice storm, the morning went still.
A bufflehead touched down right in front of me on the calm waters of Dahlonega—soft rain falling, light barely awake, everything holding its breath. 🦆❄️
One of those moments nature gives you when you’re patient enough to sit low and listen.

Buffleheads (Bucephala albeola) are cute but they dive ''all the time'' and you end up with a lot of photos of the sea. 😆 This is the female.

Le petit garrot est bien mignon mais il est toujours en train de plonger alors tu te retrouves avec plein de photos de la mer. Ceci est la femelle.

Small duck with a greyish brown body, dark back and head and a white patch on its cheeks. It is in a calm sea.Same duck but diving with its head partially under water.Same duck but all we see are the tails and feet, the rest is under water.

I am looking forward to the ducks returning for the winter and getting out there for more photo opportunities. I never know what the season will bring or what luck I will have. This one is from a frigid but sunny February morning in 2024.

Working the Dock

At the marina’s edge, the Ruddy Turnstones scurried along the green planks like tiny dockside inspectors.

Buffleheads in Motion

My first sighting of Bufflehead during a boat tour in Cape May felt like trying to photograph wind over water. They moved fast, flew low, and never stopped.

This is a male Bufflehead and another example of a very common beast who I had no idea existed until a couple of years ago. Apparently they build their nests in holes in trees made by woodpeckers. I have no info on what the woodpecker gets in return.

Buffleheads are small, striking sea ducks, but they don’t make photography easy—skittish and lightning-fast! This March morning at Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge, we watched a chaotic flurry of drakes battling over hens. For once, they were too focused on their rivalry to notice us.

This shot captures a drake in full retreat, throwing water like a tiny torpedo as he fled an aggressive rival just out of frame. Most of my frames were a blur, but I love this one—it shows the power and speed these little ducks can unleash!

Bufflehead ducks are small “sea ducks” that are fairly common in the waters around northern California. They are fairly small and, in my experience, fairly timid, making them a bit challenging for me to get good photos of them. However, during the mating season the males can get quite aggressive with each other while seeking mates. On this March morning my wife and I were driving through the lower Klamath Federal Wildlife Refuge in Siskiyou County California and we spotted several drakes squabbling over a few hens. Focused on the mating mission, they didn’t seem to notice us as we stopped the car and watched them. As small and quick as they are, I got lots of bad frames but I got a couple I like such as this one as this little drake was on the retreat from another out of the frame and throwing quite a wake and he took evasive action in all directions!

When The Sun Catches The Bufflehead Neck Just Right

If you're not into birding you might wonder what the heck a Bufflehead is. I admit to not knowing myself until I spotted one in 2017.

Annnnnddd I forgot about that until I saw one on

Someone asked for buffleheads? Here they are enjoying the bounty of the herring spawn, which explains the colour of the sea.

Three female buffleheads in the sea that looks milky turquoise due to a herring spawn. There are ripples on the surface of the water that add some texture and lines in the composition.
