Another singleton today - at least for the western hemisphere. The Horned Lark is the only member of the Lark Family (Alaudidae) in the west. Their unique appearance quite striking. They nest on the ground, so it can be a surprise to see them feeding their young so close to trails.

A Horned Lark feeding a nestling. The surprising part is that this was taken lest than a meter from the Alpine Ridge Trail in Rocky Mountain National Park. The trailhead is the parking lot for the Alpine Visitors Center. The Horned Lark is the only member of the Family Alaudidae in the Western Hemisphere (it does have a global distribution). There are 24 Genera and 98 species overall in the Family worldwide
