Description

In a bright, white room, a large-scale rectangular panel imitating a red brick wall stands on light-colored parquet flooring. This installation by Cady Noland, with its extremely flat, almost two-dimensional form, appears like a mere stage prop balancing on just two small wooden blocks. The vibrant red of the bricks is interrupted by precise white grid lines, giving the work an artificial, almost graphic austerity. This combination of monumental presence and fragile stability ironically questions the permanence and security of solid architecture.

My friend Mark hosted a #BikeCamping weekend at #PointPinole. He's interested in old #bricks, and he collects them. Part of the draw of Point Pinole was an old #brick dump, where I found this brick.

It inspired me to research the bricks used for the second #SanFrancisco City Hall, and I compiled that research in a few blog posts. I'm interested in local #history, and I knew about the #Remillard family and brick company for their contributions to #Oakland and the #SFBayArea. It was another bike ride that brought me back to them, and their bricks... The research into the Remillard Brick Company, and the Remillard family resulted in enough information that I'm putting it here.
