This is pretty cool.

It's a visualisation of the internals of The Sentinel on the #BBCMicro.

This is it generating the game landscape for the first level from 1024 pseudo-random numbers.

It’s an animated GIF. If you can’t see the animation, you can see it here:

Next week I'll be releasing a deep dive into exactly how this works.

A big thanks to Simon Owen, whose excellent repository I forked and enhanced in order to build this visualisation. It's well worth a visit.

I'm (slowly!) releasing 50+ deep dives into The Sentinel, Geoff Crammond's epic #BBCMicro game.

Batch #2 is now ready: 7 new articles about maths, geometry, trigonometry… and Revs.

Batch #3 (landscape) coming soon.

Enjoy!

I had a daft idea.

Connect a BBC Micro B monitor port to ESP32 and use quad SPI to clock RGB+line sync triggered on frame sync and then mapped to original resolution PNG image via WiFi/web page.

Technically tricky. Tiny bit of circuit for sync and levels. Small. Powered by the port. Could be in-line working to a monitor.

I decided not to, as you can just buy RGB to HDMI, and HDMI capture cards, and job done, to video/stream even.

And, I’d have to fix one of my beebs.

Mistodon: this dashing #BBCMicro high resolution graphics portrait of #ToussaintLouverture, the key leader of the Haitian Revolution, was drawn by @pixelblip and included in the MIST0221 artpack collection released five years ago this month. Happy #BlackHistoryMonth!

I've started writing a series of deep dives into Geoff Crammond's epic #BBCMicro game The Sentinel.

Here's the to-do list.

I will post a link here whenever I add a new one to thesentinel.bbcelite.com/

It's going to take a while! But it should be worth it...

That's interesting - I'm sure *my* Beeb has MIDI. (I can't get at it at the moment so am unable to check!).
Am I suffering from false-memory syndrome?

Some nostalgic fun here for users with a musical bent.
(Obviously, this sort of thing didn't exist for the BBC Micro because it had a MIDI socket - unless you know differently(?))

"Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire" has a small collection of somewhat anachronistic appearances. There is a brief glimpse of an Apple IIe and a Commodore PET 2001 appears in the background. Rather strangely for a film set in the USA, there is a fairly important role for an Acorn BBC Micro.

@argv_minus_one

People have brought up the TOPS-20 command processor already.

Just for completeness, I'll mention DCL on VMS, which had long parameter names (e.g. /COPIES to PRINT and /FULL to DIRECTORY).

There's also MCR on VMS (and RSX), with HELLO and BYE for logging on and off.

Don't forget the whole "* commands" system on the BBC MIcro, either.
