As I mentioned the other day, I really wanted an ultra-simple way to declare the contents of a slideshow presentation without getting sucked deep into Node.js hell.
So, I now have a #Python / #YAML / #markdown / #bash / #ImageMagick tool that does what I need and pretty much nothing more.
The code is in a @Codeberg repository: https://codeberg.org/dhobern/presentation
The YAML definition for my upcoming presentation is here: https://codeberg.org/dhobern/presentation/src/branch/main/slides.yaml
And here is the PDF generated from the YAML: https://codeberg.org/dhobern/presentation/src/branch/main/Lessons_from_Malaise_trapping_in_Aranda.pdf
We just released VS Code YAML 1.20.0, featuring support for JSON Schema 2019-09 and 2020-12, amongst many other features and bug fixes. Check out the full CHANGELOG here: https://github.com/redhat-developer/vscode-yaml/releases/tag/1.20.0

From my project #Carburoid, i extracted android-yaml-strings — a #Gradle plugin for managing #Android translations in #YAML, easy to read and write.
It generates native resources at build time (zero runtime cost), and supports features i missed in Android stack such as named placeholders, language enumeration or lint-safe handling of partially translated languages.
More generic Android development tools coming soon from Carburoid.
I've put together what I need. Well, I'll probably add a couple more layouts, but these are now very simple.
I've written #Python that reads a #YAML configuration file, uses #exiftool to extract metadata from the images, #montage to render the slides and #ImageMagick to build a PDF from the slides. Inevitably, I got ambitious and decided to enhance it with the option of generating any of the constituent images from really basic #markdown. So now I have a subpath that uses the Python markdown library to generate #HTML, then #wkhtmltoimage and ImageMagick to turn the HTML into a PNG that feeds with the other images into montage.
It's general enough for what I need. I've attached my test YAML and the resulting slides. Now to write the actual presentation ...
Why is #JavaScript so popular? I hate everything about it.
I'm speaking at the #Canberra Field #Naturalists meeting at #ANU next month on #Malaise trapping and the #insects and other #invertebrates that surround us without our noticing them.
I expect most of my slides to be arrays of four or six #microscope images with a header (probably a family name in most cases) and captions for each image.
I don't want to lay out all these images in #LibreOffice (or any similar presentation tool) because I'm a perfectionist and getting it all tidy will take forever.
So, I decided to try out #Slidev, #Marp and other #Markdown-based presentation tools. The Markdown part is very appealing, but they all lean hard into JavaScript. That would be fine so long as I don't have to think about that side of things.
Slidev's AppleBasic theme seemed to be the best starting point, so I started hacking it to add som extra gridded image views. Plain image grids were not too challenging, but I really want captions for each image, so I started trying to understand how the templates use the forest of underlying JS libraries and CSS artefacts to produce the displayed slides.
Frankly, the whole thing is so opaque and would take me much longer to understand than preparing multiple presentations by hand would.
Then I realised I can use #montage on the command line to produce the kind of layouts I want, and I can script #exiftool to extract and prepare the captions which will save time.
So, my new plan is to write a #Python script that processes a #YAML file listing all the slides, titles and image paths. It can generate PNG images that are close to the target 1920*1080 size (give or take a little). I'll then use LibreOffice for a couple of more text-oriented or irregular slides, export those and combine all the images into a PDF.
I'm sure this will be way faster than battling Node.js. Not sure why I felt I had to write it up.
The download rate for my JS `yaml` library is now over 100M/week! 🎉
Also, I've published the first prerelease of its next major version. I was able to drop the install size to 40% of what it was before, and make it a little bit faster while making the API a bit less... custom. More improvements to come!
Illan iloksi suunnittelen äiremuorille #ElonetPlus-katseluasemaa #RasPi4B:stä. Minulla on jostakin tilattu kaukosäädin, jonka painikkeet lähettävät ihan näppäimistöpainalluksia. #floss #linux #atkjuttuja

When I see #YAML, I run.
When I see templated YAML, I freeze. Templated YAML doesn't see you when you don't move. An though it is dangerous, you only have to wait until it breaks eventually.
And some days are 80% #documentation, 15% meeting, and 5% other.
Among the documentation was a wrestling match with #orgmode. Apparently, exporting a source block 3 spaces (because its containing numbered list item uses a number greater than 9 and is thus two digits) screws up the #YAML inside the block. But if the block is only indented by 2 spaces (because its containing numbered list item uses a number less than 10 and thus 1 digit) it's fine. #mildlyinfuriating
So, kinda tangentially related, I noticed the yaml language server I use has a couple of features called:
yaml.kubernetesCRDStore.enable: When set to true the YAML language server will parse Kubernetes CRDs automatically and download them from the CRD store.yaml.kubernetesCRDStore.url: URL of a crd store catalog to use when downloading schemas. Defaults to https://raw.githubusercontent.com/datreeio/CRDs-catalog/main.which sounded exciting, but enabling it didn't do anything, and I don't know if they want to support it either, based on the following issue:
https://github.com/redhat-developer/yaml-language-server/issues/307
I know a lot of people use neovim AND Kubernetes, but what do you use to auto-detect the JSON/YAML schemas of special CRDs (argocd applications, externalSecrets, etc)? I know this is a thing in vscode, as my coworkers talk about it, but I don't know how we do it in neovim land? This would save me a ton of headaches of having to manually add schemas definitions to stuff though (or forcing a specific file naming pattern on a project).

Trying out #PyInfra as an alternative to #Ansible. I hate having to program in #YAML so just doing it in pure #python is nice.
So far so good. I was able to install a package, upload some #systemd units, conditionally do a daemon-reload and enable the units with way less thrashing around than I've had with Ansible.
