God, but do feel old! Cut my teeth on over 25 years ago using the text editor. Well, version 9.2 has just been released.

Having a pre-configured / bundled setup for #Vim and #Emacs is great. The bare-bones vanilla install of both of them absolutely sucks to use as an IDE, but they're both incredible once you get them set up nicely for your 🧠, and starter configs like Doom Emacs _really_ help you start off with something useful you can build on.

But figuring out what needs to be done to modify or add behavior can difficult. I'm finding #LLM help to be incredible here.

@moses_izumi

I'm like the very worst #vim user. I've used it for a quarter century and maybe understand a tenth of its abilities. XD

I'm absolutely addicted to the vi-style modal controls for editing, as it feels like a superpower, like you're becoming one with the editor. Everything else about vim/neovim seems rather inscrutable to me, and I honestly found WordPerfect 5.1 (1989) easier to use. :/

Honestly, the people who write #TUI applications for linux and other Unixy OSes should seriously look at 1980s #DOS applications. They were actually easier to use, learn, and master, and I'm saying that as someone who hated DOS. XD

Finally: Vim 9.2 shows up after more than two years since 9.1, stuffing Vim9 Script with enums, generic functions, and tuple types. Plus fuzzy insert-mode completion and (on Linux/Unix) config moving to $HOME/.config/vim—fresh litterbox for your dotfiles 😼. Who’s testing the experimental Wayland UI?

«New security flaw found in Microsoft Notepad courtesy of its latest “innovative” additions»

Exactly in such places there should be no code errors. Markdown in text editor really shouldn't be the problem. But now Microsoft is showing us how AI coding (not) works and how error-prone it is.

P.S. I use Vim for the markdown, text & code files.

What mainly bugs me about #vim vs neovim right now is that i can't find a way to paste a large text into vim without having to wait few seconds until the buffer is filled. Is there a settings that i'm missing? is there a bug or just it's because how the event system is implemented?

#Vim 9.2 is out with many improvements www.vim.org/vim-9.2-rele... It's great to see that the project is alive and well and that they finally tweaked some default settings to be better aligned with the times. Perhaps in Vim 10 there will also be built-in support for TreeSitter and LSP? 😁

Another update on my #llm / #ai journey.

While writing my first #luanti mod tonight, I pulled up my local #ollama instance in a browser tab through my fork of `django-ollama`.

I did this because my #vim integration is still misconfigured, I think. More on that, later.

Anyway, llama3 batted about 50% for being useful for my requests for the evening.

First I asked it to protoype the mod, in #lua based on my description.

( If you're curious about the mod specifics, there's an [overview on my site](edward.delaporte.us/blog/luant). )

I think this kind of request **could** go well later, but llama3 was either hallucinating wildly, or simply writing code for a very outdated version of Luanti.

In fairness, Luanti had a big API update in the last year or so. I will try this again in a few months.

So I read the Luanti core API docs manually to get what I needed.

Later, I asked really basic questions about lua syntax to llama3. [I know a number of languages](edward.delaporte.us/code/)
, but lua is not one of them.

This was a great experience. Ollama with llama3 reliably answered my syntax questions, and was probably faster than searching the lua docs, for me, since I am unfamiliar with lua‘s doc pages.

Overall, I can now rescind my complaint from earlier today of no return on my time investment.

My hours of time invested have now saved me a few minutes, and I am well on my way to enjoying the [Automation Curve](xkcd.com/1319/).

Joking aside, this really is cool stuff.
