Comme d'habitude, le #JeuDePaume propose une exposition passionnante avec la rétrospective #TinaModotti à découvrir jusqu'au 12 mai.

Le coeur de l'exposition est relatif à son séjour au Mexique dans les années 20 post-révolutionnaires. Même pour qui n'est pas familier avec ce pan de l'histoire, les photographies et les explications très pertinentes permettent de réellement plonger dans l'ambiance de l'époque. 

Les autres oeuvres - moins nombreuses- ne sont pas moins intéressantes révélant des ponts avec d'autres pans de la photographie (modernistes) ou de la peinture (Georgia O'Keeffe).

If I were in Paris , I would set aside time to see this exhibition. Yet I'm not heartbroken, because photography, the image medium of the age of mechanical reproduction, isn't tied to the exhibition of "originals" in the way that painting is.

I am just finishing Letizia Argenteri's "Tina Modotti: Between Art and Revolution". This biography was published twenty years ago, and I am not sure if historiographical developments since then might have revealed important new information or perspectives about Modotti, especially regarding the death of her lover Julio Mella and the activities of her subsequent lover Vittorio Vidali during the Spanish Civil War.

The story of her photography, representing the transition from apolitical modernism to image production activism is exhilarating. The story of her life, embodying the passage from Bohemia through the militancy of the Sacco-Vanzetti years and Mexican muralism to the grim, grey years of Stalinism, is painfully saddening.
