Startups used to launch with some code and a dream. Now they launch with a Notion page, a waitlist of 37 bots, and a podcast episode titled 'Why We Built This (Before Building Anything).' šŸ’”

Trying to hide your firewall from a DDOS is like putting sunglasses on a dog and hoping no one notices. Turns out, they all run the same tricks under the hood.

Most firewalls share the same operating system, so attackers just study the BSD IP stack and make educated guesses

Almost there.
The server is basically ready — it just needs a little more tweaking.
One silent fan in the power supply, and everything will finally run as it should.
Patience, small upgrades, and a lot of love for quiet hardware.

Whoever thinks this is broken, raise your hand!

Of course it breaks just when it has a completely new strap, and I ordered three spares just in case… This is so me.

Sorry for the sudden flood of weather posts! šŸŒ§ļø I was fine-tuning my Pi 5 Weatherbot šŸ¤– and its alert system. Things should settle down now. We're actually getting some seriously cold weather for Florida 🄶, perfect for hot chocolate ā˜•, especially since I don’t drink coffee 😊. #WeatherUpdates #FloridaWeather #TechLife #Selfhosting

A boat with a brown cover is parked on a trailer in a grassy yard beside a white house with horizontal siding. There are several trees, including tall pine trees, surrounding the area. A tall metal antenna tower stands near the house. The sky is overcast and the word "Nest" appears in white text in the top right corner.

Been a while since I posted here. Let's just say that things were a bit hectic and busy.

Latest update to the geeky side of my life is that after years of championing the iPad Pro and Magic Keyboard as my primary workstation, I’ve officially returned to the Mac.

Don’t get me wrong—iPadOS 26 was a massive leap forward and finally gave power users the tools we’ve been begging for. But even with those leaps, I found myself tired of the small compromises and workarounds.

I just picked up the 14" MacBook Pro (M5), and it feels like coming home. Ready to rediscover that classic Mac workflow! Also decided to pimp its look a little with a @dbrand skin.

I just found out you don’t need to reserve seven racks for SAP just to keep the support contract from some German TLA IBM spinoff. My inner IT guy is crying and laughing at the same time.

All those server racks locked up for SAP—and you can’t even touch them or break the contract. The dream: those SAP racks finally gone, support contracts less scary, and you actually get to use your server room for, well, things that matter.

When you realize you're not the only one who lost server real estate to SAP contracts, there’s this quiet satisfaction in knowing it’s finally getting fixed.

Find out more about SAP in Episode 6 of IT Horror Stories with Jack Smith : SAP Happens.

What is the most unique, weird, or funny domain name you have ever subscribed to? I subscribed to these: `top.top-top-top.top` (I added `top` as a subdomain manually) and `my.my-my-my.my` (yes, I added the `my` subdomain as well).

One thing I’m learning this season:

You don’t need to sprint every week to move forward.
Consistency beats urgency. Calm beats burnout.

Did you know airlines literally grounded every plane during the Y2K countdown, just in case onboard computers lost sense of time? Sometimes playing it safe means staying on the ground.

The big win was waking up on January 1st and realizing all the planes—and their clocks—were just fine.
