Too much sun available? How about some sun prints with plants? I just discovered the (simple) secret for fixation of turmeric prints (turmeric is extremely light-sensitive): youtube.com/watch?v=05yT8-WquMw

These yellow prints work best in summer because they need light.

Other sun print techniques with water colour inks need warmth and can be done on radiators even in winter.

Open art book in accordion folding made of slightly crumpled and then de-crumpled art paper dyed with turmeric. It has a bright yellow natural colour and marks in pink and green from alcohol inks. Without fixation, its colour will bleech out with sunlight. You can fixate turmeric dye with a solution of baking soda in water.Crumbled paper with turmeric dye, alsohol ink marks in pink and blue and blue asemic writing. I use such papers for art books or collages.Sun print with weatercolour inks (Ecoline) and stencils (art nouveau patterns). This technic needs only warm temperatures, so you can do it in winter on a radiator. Soaked, very wet paper on a glass plate gets drops of ink colours. Place the stencils on the paper, hild them down with clean stones and keep it warm until the paper has thouroughly dried. The result will always be a surprise because the colours begin to "wander".2 examples of watercolour-stencil prints showing art nouveau stencil ornaments (bright blueish green) on a very coloured background. Squares show the contours of the used plastic stencils. The more regularly you press down the stencils, and the more time you give it to dry, the more beautiful and clear the result. Outside of the stencil the paper looks like painted wet in wet.

Overpowered by the sun

We intended to produce a series of cyanotype photographs as a low-tech method to document the more-than-human elements shaping the landscape, so we brought a printing kit with us from the Netherlands. As relative beginners with this technique, we diligently followed the instructions provided by the Dutch maker of the kit.

When developing our initial print run, all rinsed papers turned almost solid blue. Almost all of the intricate shapes and textures from the materials we had placed on the photosensitive paper had vanished. The power of the midday sun had fully exposed the entire paper.

Driven by an urge to find out what could have caused this failure, we gave it another try on the following day. This time, the prints turned out perfectly! The secret? Reducing the exposure time to less than 30% of the length indicated in the instructions. The Spanish sun was simply too powerful for Dutch standards.

In places where (natural) clouds are rare and the sun intensity is exceptionally high, mega computing infrastructures are faced with conflicting conditions. While an abundance of sunshine brings with it a significant potential for renewable energy generation through solar or wind power, it also produces tremendous heat and drought, which can make a territory unliveable over time; especially if the already scarce water resources are further exploited to provide vital cooling for overheated computer chips.

Do you ever think of the sun when you are working in the Cloud?

Cyanotype magnet number two.

This was the second of my two super flat 4 cm x 7 cm magnets that came with some advertising material years ago.

I made a small error while cutting the top and adhering a bit more to the rule of thirds with the placement would have made it more balanced, otherwise it's pretty cool.

Cyanotype with a sort of fake negative, concept testing: sharpie doodle on clear plastic sheet (underexposed because there wasn't a lot of evening sun anymore)

I did a similar one last year with a tiny doodle straight on glass, but didn't like it too much.

Light blue cyanotype of a doodled mountain landscape with crescent moon. The negative doodle on plastic is also visible.

Blue skeletons.
Prepped these last night and put them on the window sill for the morning sun.

@lokigwyn
Bonsoir.
Je suis intéressé par le monde du cyanotype.
Mais il n'y a pas toujours de soleil.

Pourriez-vous indiquer le type de lampe UV que vous utilisez ? Ou le modèle de lampe?
Très remercié.

Day 23 of #ArtAdventCalendar

More weeds, more cyanotype prints. Even though it's just the end of December and thus in the middle of winter, I'm already looking forward to spring when everything will sprout once again outside, flowers as well as "weeds" and I'll get new inspiration for cyanoprints.
