Starting my journey of switching from Windows to #Linux as my daily driver - I have a shiny new #Starlabs laptop with #Ubuntu, just went through the first-boot process, and it's already perplexing.

Apparently the default user UID has changed from 500 to 1000... Which is annoying, because I'd like to keep my systems consistent, and I am UID 500 on the two servers we're running (both of which were set up *mumble* years ago).

How much trouble am I going to cause myself if I change my UID from 1000 to 500 on this new laptop?

Does anyone here have a Starlabs laptop? I would love to hear your feedback. What's great, what's not so great?

Thanks!

Got my new #Starlabs Byte #Linux #Ubuntu desktop, I've only ever been a power user on any system. it read my game PDFs on my hard drive, good start trying to get qobuz working. Wiz 101 with wine is next.

Put remoting via work's MS auth system on the shelf

Steam is set up

What are essentials?

Probably need a Dev sandbox partition for FOSS projects (still have a dangerously curious brain)

I may have created a partition in 2006

Another rant: the other day I made a poll about looking at laptops and I mentioned I was looking into the Starlabs Horizon.

Not sure why I got it all mixed up but I'm pretty perplexed in their choice of using an Intel i3-N305. Maybe for better battery life? The more I looked into it, I guess I really don't know who this laptop is built for.

I'm still on the market but I think I'll end up getting a refurbished ThinkPad.

Thinking to buy a new laptop as the prices ramp up right now. Can't decide between a #Framework 13, #Tuxedo Infinitybook 14 Pro Gen 10 or maybe even something like a #Starlabs Starbook. Prices are quite different. Repairability / upgradability is important to me. Also, I want to use #NixOs and will mainly use it for software development and photo editing.
Maybe someone here can recommend one? ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐Ÿ˜„

I'm in the market for a new (or newish to me) laptop. My budget is roughly $800-1.1k USD. I think I've narrowed it down to a few but would love to hear the community's input.

This will be used for light development, studying, coding, and some light gaming.

@pganssle It might depend on where you are located:
#System76 within US
#starlabs within UK
#tuxedocomputers or #slibmook in EU

Ordered the StarLabs StarBook. I'll have it in a few days, so I don't know how the device itself looks and feels yet, but I have to say:

Communications with #StarLabs about the order so far has been absolutely stellar.

The delivery is a bit fraught for independent reasons, and StarLabs went out of their way to communicate clearly and adjust their regular shipping schedule to accommodate this.

Truly a breath of fresh air in that regard. Here's hoping the laptop meets the same high standard!

@mosgaard
This is pretty much my experience too. I use Mac mainly, and Zorin on my #starlabs laptop.
No issues, friendly forum.
I mostly do python/web/database work, so Iโ€™ve added #Homebrew for Linux as an additional manager for those sorts of packages. Works really well and keeps my dev stuff separate from the main OS stuff.
I do spend a lot of time in the terminal (on Mac too) and so far Iโ€™ve not broken anything ๐Ÿ˜‚
I went with the win7 layout and dark theme.

@Anachron @mxk @starlabssystems very long time for it to finally arrive. I ordered it ~2 years ago iirc (would need to check the exact date). I have one of the early model modes from the first batch, i.e. it has a 3k display and a N200 chip. Some things might (!) have bevome better with the N350 and the 2k screen of later batches but most of my points still stand. From my experience and for my use case/expectations, it's disappointing to say the least. <<

Does anyone have the #starlabs Starfighter laptop?

That big full size sexy beast? Curious what it's like?

I finally found time to finish writing up my thoughts on the #StarLabs #StarLite MkV, a Linux-native tablet: lionsphil.co.uk/chaos/starlite

It's...definitely a very, very, reserved recommendation. But also a chunk of y'all who read my toots are the kind of people who are braced for Linux.

Over the next few years I would like to be replacing my devices with easy use-repairable alternatives: things such as the FairPhone (de-googleified) and StarLite V tablet will become my daily drivers!

The hope here is then to have the life-cycle of a device to be 10+ years replacing any part that breaks. Iโ€™m done with these locked down pieces of hardware that mess replacing every 5 years because I canโ€™t replace the stupid charging port! :akko_angry:
