With my #NovaCustom I now have the most diskspace that I've ever had in 2 pieces in my life (2x 4TB). B/c the computer remains usable under heavy load (as long as I don't mind the fan at max & the old-school crunch of spinning disks), I'm consolidating a stack of old hard drives.

Welp, I filled 4TB overnight. I cleared about 200GB, but df still says this:

@neal Ugh, everything is compatible and nothing is. I have returned more peripheral related hardware than I've kept since getting the #NovaCustom laptop.

I really appreciate all the help you all have given me in the minor things here and there with my #NovaCustom laptop.

I have one last strange problem: every day or so, all the keyboards just stop working. Pointing devices mostly still work (although some oddities). I thought maybe it was some modal dialog. or something. Get this: *hibernating* and returning from hibernate fixes it. Come back up and keyboard works again!

If you want to take privacy and security to the next level check out Novacustom laptops. (Dutch based)
They provide laptops with opensource firmware, very ethical company in my opinion!
And they joined the right-to-repair group so the devices comes with qualtiy and waranty label and offer spare parts too.

#NovaCustom uses a third-party vendor for their Coreboot images called @Dasharo. I'll try to report the bug through them, as that seems more likely to help someone than trying to report directly upstream to @coreboot.

I do know a bunch of the #Coreboot developers personally as they're an #SFC project so I may also bug them about this the next time I see them.😈

The only thing left is I'd love advice on how to report this bug upstream to #Linux. I've truly never understood how to make useful bug reports to Linux itself, as problems are often so hardware specific.

Keep in mind that I am a collector of old displays. I've been collecting cast-offs for this moment, which means I have the native #NovaCustom laptop, plus a 1920x1200 DVI/VGA (13 yrs old) plus a 1080p TV built in 2009. So, they are just *big* but still less screen real-estate than most people have.

My plan for a fourth is to mount it on an arm *above* all these, and use it only for items I monitor throughout the day, not active work.

It's always much work configuring new hardware, but usually it's rote work & issues resolve quickly.

Sadly, one issue with my new #NovaCustom laptop lingers: I cannot get hibernate-to-disk to work reliably.

I realize w/ extra-long battery life in most laptops, hibernate-to-disk is out of fashion, but the @novacustom has only ≈ 2hrs battery life with Intel Management Engine off, so I need it.

…reminded me of the more classic version: naming machines. I often wonder if #SFC is the last place that has a theme for machine naming. (It's biological tree species (because our logo)).

But, my recent evitalized excitement about my lifelong fandom led me to ask our sysadmin @paulv for an exception to name my newer SFC equipment after #MST3K things.

The #NovaCustom laptop is 'torgo' at my spouse's suggestion.

The right people will get it!

I'm going to do a series of blog posts after the #Vizio trial is over about my upgrade to my #NovaCustom laptop & a much newer #Debian & all the stuff I went through to make it happen.

I'm starting this thread simply to have a place to keep all my ideas about those posts publicly, in case they are immediately useful.

I suspect I won't have time to engage in replying on this thread until circa 2026-02-15, which is when I plan to start the blog posts.

TL;DR: it's going pretty good.

My new #NovaCustom laptop led me to clean up random electronics & papers & start over with an empty desk for 1st time since 2017-02.

This is how frugal those who rely on donors for a living should be.

We bought this 1997: a junky IKEA desk — what my spouse & I could afford in grad school.

Mine crumbled in a 2005 move, but hers stands. She doesn't work from home so she gave it to me.

It shakes a bit when I type fast but works. I won't ask #SFC to buy me a new one until it is truly unstable.

I thank all who helped me to get my @novacustom laptop into production.

My goofy RAID1 across Thunderbolt setup now works. More on how later.

Remaining problems:

0. I was running Buster (yes, 3x oldstable). xfce, sawfish, & Emacs configs all broke on Trixie.

1. Expected keyboard problem: #NovaCustom keyboard is nice *except* for the lack of pointer stick (trackpoint) ruins my productivity.
For now, I'll lug around an HHKB Studio. 😬

2. ZOMG hires screens & my old eyes. All fonts sooo small.

I'm impressed with how my new #Debian #NovaCustom laptop is handling the bizarre I/O task that I' gave it.

So, the internal disks are each in a RAID-1 that's running a LUKS encrypted ext4, but the companion drives for each are on other side of a USB4 20Gbps (I thought it was using Thunderbolt but it's not). The RAID-1s are both rebuilding *while* I apt install every package I have ever installed, & rsync 800GB of data at 4MB/sec.

Every so often I/O freezes for like 2 min, then just resumes.

Are you asking why I didn't get @debian pre-installed by #NovaCustom? I guess maybe I should have, but i have some goofy things that I do in my laptop setups. Keep watching this thread and you'll see my goofiness.
