The good side of this, is that I can keep an eye on both the #NetBSD 11 VM and the compilation of qemu on my #Slackware server! 😋

@KarlPettersson

Both my virtualization machines are Linux. This is my (underpowered) #Slackware server...

I know there is #SlackWare the #Linux for the #subgenius users.

But would anyone be interested in a #BSD style UNIX fork

@jloc0 : don't know what happened between updates , but sound on Noctalia/Mango, including kb hotkeys, is working great (again). Don't touch it anymore 🤣

Amen !

Once again #KDE tries to get rid of minority distributions. This time by replacing SDDM with PLM (plasma login manager). PLM depends on systemd.
So sooner or later no KDE for #alpineLinux, #FreeBSD, #Gentoo, #NetBSD, #OpenBSD, #Slackware, #VoidLinux, etc.

For #BLFS it is no problem as BLFS itself recently discontinued its non-systemd version.

OpenJDK updates (Slackware packages)

Last weekend I uploaded updates for OpenJDK based Java versions 8, 11 and 17, and added a new version 21 to the repository. Specifically, my repository now offers: openjdk (version 8): updated to 8u482_b08 for Slackware 15.0 and newer, using the icedtea 3.38.0 framework. Note: for OpenJDK 8, you need to install either the JDK or the JRE, not both (the JDK contains the JRE).

Has anyone installed my mess of pkgs for plasma 6.4.6 on #slackware 15.0 ?

I’m generally just curious. I know I haven’t talked much about it, as it’s not really a focus of mine (doing anything on 15.0 that is) but I am curious if anyone’s tried it out.

It seems the dynamic duo of LQ think they would be doing a first if they got it running. Who gonna tell em? 😆

Installing #Slackware #Linux using #vmm on #OpenBSD. Got some help from this video on getting the console to display correctly in the terminal. :runbsdBg: #RunBSD #BSD #virtualization

Planning on using this as a practice Linux system for my Linux+ studies. :flan_book::flan_hacker:

Screenshot of MATE Desktop on OpenBSD showing MATE System Monitor on the lower right showing brief system information, and MATE Terminal maximized underneath the System Monitor showing three terminal tabs, but focused on the left one where the Slackware installation process is taking place via a serial console connection to vmm. It's waiting for me to select a partition on which to install Slackware, and highlighted on device /dev/sda2 which is 8 gigabytes.

Killing the network or ssh service on a machine I was using remotely is up there in the most annoying #linux blunders alongside that one time I accidentally uninstalled glibc on #slackware (trying to upgrade glib2)

#Slackware vs #OpenBSD round 1:

- Slackware is more user friendly
- Simple updates
- Offline updates possible
- No BGP routing in base install
- Standard Bind for DNS

- OpenBSD slightly less user friendly
- Simple updates
- Offline updates possible, but require a bit more work
- BGP in base install
- Unbound in base install

Winner: Fish Linux! Sorry, OpenBSD! 🏆 :openbsd:

Mirror Undernet --> mirror.undernet.uy/

That was fun! 😄
I’ve vibe-integrated Linux 6.18 mainline LTS onto the Raspberry Pi 5 for Slackware AArch64.

An installer test image is available if you have an RPi 5. You can’t install Slackware yet (that’s coming).

If you’re up for poking it and reporting back, that would be helpful 👍

For those who didn't wait and installed v3.5.5 on their own or from Sid, FYI it landed in #Debian Testing today. I don't track Stable but generally speaking, when there's a major fashion faux pas updates can actually land in Stable (coming straight from Sid) before they do in Testing.

For those who run #Slackware -current, you wouldn't have really noticed anything, since #OpenSSL version 3.5.5 was pushed out on 27 January. And again, Slackware is one of, if not the first to address and act on exploits and vulnerabilities, often on #0day.

Fun Fact: Following the very public cannibalization of Sun Microsystems by the Evil EllisonCo (Oracle), Slackware Linux was the first major distro to adopt and release #MariaDB, replacing #MySQL as the default in the installation - credit where due, IIRC, the German fork of Slackware, #SuSE, was the second major distro to do so shortly thereafter.

Partial of the Slackware Changelog for 27 January 2026 with the release of OpenSSL v3.5.5 highlighted.

It's actually not a bad idea to follow this changelog no matter which distros you administer because the Slackware team is more often than not the very first to respond and release the patched packages.

For those in the #Slackware maintainance realm, what are some good tools to have on hand for checking your slackbuilds and the like? I.e. linters, easy bumping utilities a la updpkgsums, etc?

Tried to emulate Slackware 4.0 the other day and I think it mostly worked. KDE is nice though too bad I couldn’t get any music to play on it via the emulator.

#Linux #Slackware

Slackware 4.0 desktop running KDE 1.x with a Konsole window open. The terminal shows a root shell where /etc/issue reports Linux kernel 2.2.6 and attempts to read /etc/slackware-version and /etc/slackware-release return “No such file or directory.” The blue KDE desktop includes icons for Trash, Templates, and Autostart, with the classic KDE panel at the bottomSlackware 4.0 system running KDE 1.1.1, shown in the KDE Control Center. The information panel lists Linux kernel 2.2.6 on an i586 machine, hostname “sinclair,” user root, and a 1999 build date. The classic early KDE interface appears with a blue desktop background, left-side configuration tree, and the KDE logo banner

I could not find any #linux distro that would provide pre-compiled kernels for direct download, having ALL the following modules built-in at once:
- btrfs
- nvme
- usbhid

Some time ago there was still a #slackware huge kernel provided, but not anymore. What a pity.

Trying out compiling ffmpeg with SVT-AV1 support, and I ran into some compile issues with the SlackBuild from 15.0 and current.

I needed to apply the following patches from SVT-AV1 3.1.2 to ffmpeg to get around a compile error:

libavcodec/libsvtav1.c:438:61: warning: passing argument 2 of 'svt_av1_enc_init_handle' from incompatible pointer type [-Wincompatible-pointer-types]

For ffmpeg 4, I applied ffmpeg_n5_fix.patch and for 6 I applied ffmpeg_n7_fix.patch successfully.
