I don't usually like to utterly strip and repaint/finish antiques, but that 1909 White Family Rotary I've been working on is simply too far gone. As there is zero hope of restoring originality without investing a fortune into a machine no one loves, I've just stripped all the japanning...no easy task.

This is the one that someone would make a better yard ornament than antique in lovely original condition, as it was before spending years in the mud.

I just threaded a serger for the first time. It's an extremely cheap machine over 20 years old with the sort of instructions where they don't want to confuse anyone, so they just provide pictures which only sorta match the hardware, like a cartoon subway map. They're worse than no instructions at all.

It's the most stressful thing I've done in ages. I'm going to lie down for a bit.

While this video is fascinating and the end results are gorgeous, we dearly fear for the health of these folks.

This whole setup is OSHA's worst nightmare.

I'm back at my machine today! At least I've got a few things I can work on while I wait for the seven yards of fabric I ordered last week to arrive. 😵

A sewist came to us with an odd problem. Her Janome M7, which was working perfectly fine, suddenly wouldn't allow her to use anything except straight stitches. Turns out, the machine was too clever for its own good.

Couldn't wait; did some essential cleaning and oiling and put the Consew 226 back it its table. With very little knowledge of the machine, I had it sewing .4" of veg tan leather in no time with a *fabric* needle. Perfect stitches. Quiet motor, reasonably linear clutch.

I'm happy. There's a lot more cleaning to do, it sat unnoticed for three decades, but this thing is ready to go back to work tomorrow.

One of today's customers learned the hard way that sewing through your finger is bad for you AND the machine. 😱

Unfortunately, the machine will need a little more than a bandage, but it's still totally fixable.

Working on the most delightfully clean Kenmore 158 series right now.

This may be the first time we've encountered a sewist who actually _uses_ the little brush that comes with the machine. 🤯

It was dry as a bone, though. A little oil on every moving part and it's good as new!

Cams are just amazing, aren't they!

Got my old friend Jones out today, and had to wind new thread on the bobbin.

I finally hemmed my pants today. I’m very pleased with how they turned out.
Using the sewing machine was so therapeutic. I haven’t used it in a long time. I’m excited to finish some other projects now!

Why the fuck does this sewing machine company make different low/midrange models for different regions? I can't find any of the ones people like online here. And I can't find any reviews online of the ones they sell here. Like, I found at least 4 that's in none of the international stores

I guess this explains the smoke coming out when the #SewingMachine is running 🤔

Close up of a green Elna #1 sewing machine. The cover for the engine house has been removed. A black cylinder holding the capacitors has clearly leaked. Black goo is seen below the cylinder.

What exactly is the character defect that makes someone see a beautiful antique and think "Hey, nice, I'll put that in the mud in my yard! It'll look cool!"

Exactly what happened here. From 1909 to 2023 this was a gorgeous machine. Then a couple of kids did this to it.
