#Qualtrics

I manage a #sonasystems service and I am also the "brand administrator" for #qualtrics in my department. There's an issue with confidentiality; I wonder if some #research or #survey person knows a way around it:

SONA's "Qualtrics integration" instructions describe how to set things up so research participants can click the entry for a study on the SONA page and be taken to the corresponding Qualtrics survey, then--when finished with the survey--be redirected back to SONA with an anonymous record of their participation in Qualtrics.

The problem is that it's not anonymous. Not even a little. Not if you're both the SONA person and the Qualtrics person, which is probably the case in many institutions.

SONA does indeed replace the research participant's name in the URL info string with an "anonymous" ID number. That number is sent back to SONA for purposes of giving the research participant credit in SONA.

This process is only anonymous if you don't have access to both SONA and the Qualtrics survey: SONA gives a random (?) 5-digit ID number to each participant and send that to Qualtrics, which uses it to populate an embedded data field called id. Then at the end of the survey Qualtrics sends the same ID number back to SONA.

I'm looking at SONA and Qualtrics. Qualtrics gives me the "anonymous" ID number of every participant sent from SONA. SONA has the ID number paired with names in a fairly easy-to-access dashboard view for users with the roles "PI", "administrator," or (I think) "researcher".

So every student researcher doing "anonymous" survey projects can see the exact responses on surveys for each student participant, by name. It's not hard. I don't think any of my students is savvy enough to see this and pair the two values, or that they care, but this is Very Not Anonymous.

Is there some way around this where SONA-Qualtrics integration works, and is also actually anonymous, even if someone (e.g., me, the SONA administrator) has access to both the Qualtrics data and the SONA system?

[edit: Since finding this, I've been just deleting the ID data from the Qualtrics data when downloading. However, it's not an option to delete the embedded data variable until all data collection is finished ForEver, so the possibility of identifying participants who were promised anonymity remains until then; I can manage this for my students, but not for other faculty, and of course this all depends on my honesty. I do not want anything like this to depend on my honesty.]

Abstract. Argument mapping is the practice of diagraming the logical relationships between each proposition in an argument, including objections and counter-objections. Some studies find that courses that teach students how to map arguments exhibit better critical thinking and persuasive writing than students in other courses. These promising results are sometimes from surveyors of argument mapping goods and services, and they garner plenty of attention in fields that champion careful thinking and communication. However, the total evidence is mixed, null results are often never published, and many promising studies have not controlled for known confounds. Two waitlist control trials (N = 83) attempted to address t

This is a solution to a niche problem, but I was happy with it, so I'll share

If you use #Qualtrics for survey experiments you will want to share the exact survey - item wording, response options, order of items - as part of your open data, analysis code and study materials repository for all that righteous #reproducibility #OpenResearch karma

Problem is, the Qualtrics export of a survey puts each question and response option on a separate page, making the document effectively unreadable

–sn–

Qualtrics: You can just check this box to create "n/a" options for all the items in your slider table.

Me: Nice! Same for matrix tables, too?

Qualtrics: That is just preposterous. Now let me show you how you can repeat all your response labels in matrix tables.

Me: So handy! I assume this works the same for slider tables.

Qualtrics: Why would anyone want that?

What applications are folks using for surveys these days? I've been using a free account for nearly 10 years, but they only want to assist paid users. Their pricing is only for enterprise users, so looking for something to replace it. I need more than Google Forms.

Is #qualtrics getting enshittified? Or maybe just "we're awesome so why should we improve things?"

I've been a long-time cheerleader for Qualtrics, since they were little more than a couple of white dudes building cool stuff in Provo, UT (and their yearly subscription rate for academics was 1/4 of what it is now). Recent things that are giving me hassles of various degrees, all of which have been issues for 20-odd years:

- No "repeat headers" for slider tables
- Bipolar matrix tables are broken for mobile
- No bipolar slider tables
- Need to know arcane & bespoke CSS to adjust basic things like response option labels

And my 20-year pet peeve:

Let me use words and letters as export labels, not just numbers.

Anyway. Seems like that shit (and more) could have all been fixed sometime in the past two decades.

#Qualtrics my dude you are still a kickass survey package, even if #academic departments like mine have to fight with our admin & accounting departments every goddamn year for your not-so-cheap offerings.

That said, I see you're offloading your #support to a "customer success hub" instead of humans, and that the most recent humans, with names reminiscent of the Indian subcontinent, seem confused about questions that don't have talking-point answers.

I think you're on that ol' #enshittification waterslide.

First pic: single screen saying Ask any questions about your quote or invoice! with a note at the bottom saying you can't ask any questions about quotes or invoices.

Pics 2 & 3: frustrating conversation with a "renewals management" person who seemed to almost ignore my question until I perhaps used the right keywords and (my assumption) a supervisor with a bigger Answers For The Customers binder stepped in and responded.

[Note: I have no issue with anyone from any subcontinent; I have an issue with companies outsourcing labor to the cheapest possible market.]

Hello,
I received a request to confirm/update information about our qualtrics account. There are only two entries: Primary and Secondary contact. I'm listed as the primary contact, as seen below:

Primary Contact
This i the business owner of your Qualrics contract Renewal notifications, quotes and contrac changes are sent here.
First name: [redacted]
LAST Name: [redacted]

I'm concerned about language. I'm the Brand Administrator, but I am most certainly not an owner of the business ( [MY UNIVERSITY] or, as far as I know, of the contract (if it has an owner, that's also probably [MY UNIVERSITY] ).
Can you clarify what I'm affirming if I confirm this information?

Hi [redacted],
Would you like to change the primary contact? If so, please provide us with the name and email address of the new primary contact person.
Thank you,

name: [redacted]
title: Renewals Management[me]: I'm fine with being the primary contact; if you look back at my message you'll see that my concern is going from "brand administrator" to "business owner" or similar. This is a university. Its owners are, arguably, the citizens of [redacted]. My concern is whether there will be legal issues with me agreeing that I am the "business owner." If that is not what the term means, I'm grateful for your clarification.

[Qualtrics Renewals]: Yes there in no confusion you are only Primary contact.

name: [redacted]
title: Renewals Management

[me]: Thank you for your response. It does not answer my question, just as your previous response did not, but at this point I'm going to stop asking.

[not seen: longer delay than others]

[Qualtrics Renewals]
Hi [redacted],
No, there won't be any legal issues with acknowledging that you are the business owner. The phrase you see in the system describing ‘business owner’ was phrased incorrectly. By agreeing, you will confirm that you are the primary contact and will receive information regarding your renewal, including quotes and any changes. I hope this addresses your question.
Thank you,

name: [redacted; note same name as previous emails but language style seems quite different]

Listen, #qualtrics
I love you, you know I do. But in your "look and feel" section for the entire #survey you specify default question/answer/etc. font sizes as 'px'.

Then when I go to specify formatting of a specific question it's in 'pt'.

I would like to make my text larger or perhaps smaller than the default size. How the fuck do I do that? You might as well define one as 26 blorbs and the other as 6, 10, 12, 14, 18, or 24 Zonkies.

Yes, I know I can change some things with custom CSS, which is what I'll have to do. What I wish is that the #design experience was consistent here.

I suppose the overall user-friendliness and intuitiveness of Qualtrics makes little issues like this stand out.

Well done - the conference was fantastic!

Inspired by Ken Hughes as “the King of CX”, I’m thinking about trying on “the Empress of EX”. Thoughts ?🤔 😂

@Psyvacy Fraud is impossible because the surveys from qualtrics are not profitable to the survey contributors (AFAIK; fraud entails using deception to profit).

IP reputation is a crude and blunt instrument that undermines most surveys by excluding the whole demographic of digital rights proponents which silences important voices; yielding only results from people unconcerned with privacy.

The survey URLs are unique and distributed by email to solicit known individual prospective contributors through that apparently unique URL, which they can ensure only submits one ballot. That’s apparently how some of the #Qualtrics surveys work.

I’ve not done a deep dive on their business but if they are also distributing non-unique URLs to survey to many people, the questions need to be clever.

The two types of surveys obviously have different needs and challenges, so it’s probably unwise to try to use the same canned platform for both. Adding compensation complicates the approach considerably more.

A Tor-blocking CAPTCHA-pushing survey is only sensible if you actually intend to survey the demographics of tech illiterates and those apathetic about tech rights. If that demographic is inappropriate for the research, then qualtrics is unsuitable. You cannot ignore the /observer effect/. Qualtrics amplifies the observer effect with disregard.

The ironic injustice is that as I am hit with survey after survey from financial institutions, I have lots of feedback to give them about how their banking website (for example) blocks me or pushes CAPTCHA, and yet the survey itself has the same problems hindering me from participating. They sometimes say “how is our website? Take this survey… (qualtrics)…” I cannot give feedback about the ways in which their website is shitty when the survey itself is even more broken.

So in most surveys I find them to be excluding the demographic of people they most need to hear from. It’s an addiction to digital transformation. The option to send paper surveys with a prepaid return envelope is being overlooked in too many situations.

@AstaMcCarthy @proffnes

2024-11-23

@AstaMcCarthy @proffnes It’s just crazy that someone would solve a #CAPTCHA of any kind to take a #survey. I suppose the survey pusher must be a charity that the survey taker really wants to help.

I primarily just get Qualtrics surveys from financial institutions who repeatedly nag me to take their survey. Every single time I get a 403 forbidden (Tor is blocked). So they want to force me to disclose even more personal data than the survey itself calls for, even if the survey pusher follows @renebekkers’s guide¹. Yikes.. then hearing from other ppl who can reach the site that they must solve a captcha and dance for them.. what a shit-show. Who are these ppl willing to bend over backwards to give both data and labor for nothing?

So, here is my question: how can I stop all senders (financial institutions in particular) from sharing my email address with Qualtrics? The bottom of these nags has an unsubscribe button. I generally avoid those as they signal that me email address is live. But what if I visit those unsubscribe links? Will it unsubscribe all future qualtrics nags by that sender?

…Oh shit… 403 error. So we cannot unsubscribe without compromising more data. Surely #Qualtrics violates³ the #CanSpamAct by blocking people from accessing the unsubscription mechanism.

@samweingamgee’s #privacy concern² is also notable.

@proffnes Better not do that on Qualtrics. You then immediately filter out all survey participants that actually care about privacy.

Qualtric claims the right to use personal information for advertising based on "legitimate business interests" and it uses Google reCAPCHA that comes with a myriad of dystopian terms: policies.google.com/privacy?hl
policies.google.com/terms?hl=e

A much better alternative is to use limesurvey.org/
