#CitizensAssemblies: strengthening democracy and participation

" #Earth4All advocates for citizens’ assemblies as a way of restoring public trust and participation in politics and creating safe spaces for dialogue around polarising issues.

We are calling for citizens’ assemblies on economic systems change so that we, the people, get a say in the kind of economic system we want.

What is a citizens’ assembly?

Citizens’ assemblies are designed to allow for a public debate outside of political parties. A randomly-selected group of citizens representing the full diversity of society are invited to participate in a process to explore an issue and formulate recommendations to government or parliaments. Often, independent experts are brought in to discuss problems and potential solutions.

We are living in a time of social and political polarisation. Social tensions are on the rise, bolstered by skyrocketing #inequality, and #democracy is increasingly at risk. Just 39% percent of people trust their governments to make good decisions. We urgently need to rebuild trust in our political systems.

On the other hand, we know that around the world, people want economic systems change. Holding citizens’ assemblies on this topic would open up space for exploring the kind of change we want, building trust and understanding between different groups, and co-creating a common agenda for the greater good.

In the 2024 Earth for All survey, 62% of people surveyed supported the use of citizens' assemblies to increase citizens’ influence in political decision-making.

What are some examples of citizens’ assemblies?

Citizens’ assemblies have already been used successfully to navigate politically contentious issues in highly polarised democracies. Prominent examples include:

- The Irish citizens’ assembly on abortion. The assembly is credited with helping Irish society navigate a deeply polarising issue. It led to a referendum and eventually a change in law.
- The Canadian Citizens’ Assembly on Democratic Expression, a three-year initiative to look at impact of digital technologies on society.
- France’s Convention Citoyenne Pour le Climat, the climate citizens’ assembly and a similar UK Climate Assembly.
- The Global Citizens’ Assembly for People and Planet was launched at New York Climate Week in 2024 and aims to bring citizen participation to the COP30 climate summit in Brazil."

Linux and the entire open source movement have reached a breakpoint in recent years. With Ollama and Deepseek, at the latest, it is now definitively and indisputably the absolute cutting edge of technology in all areas of software. For companies, research institutions, and social players in general, it is no longer a question of whether to support this amusing anarcho-nerd project; rather, it is necessary to use it in order to remain competitive. Even German civil servants will soon be driving their ox carts with Linux, even if no one will tell them so they don't wake up (history teaches us that an awakened German civil servant poses a real danger to the surrounding communities).

Ten years ago, as an interested friend of the movement, it was still possible to be well informed about which projects were currently underway, but today that is impossible. FOSS has penetrated all areas, and the supervillains haven't noticed. They can't be that super. We have taken over power because it is a completely different kind of power than the classic power structures, which are and always have been centralized. It is possible to create a democratic world without kings, without parliaments, without plenary sessions, and still, or precisely because of this, address individual issues, even if they contradict each other.

This is a completely new way of looking at the world, and we are part of it. Before his dementia, Žižek always said, “The key is to cut off their balls.” And at some point, they look down and wonder where their balls are. And even though it's already too late, they haven't even noticed their castration and are still wandering around like zombies.

Da hat er wohl recht, der @TheMorpheus Linux und die gesamte Open-Source-Bewegung haben in den vergangenen Jahren einen Breakpoint erreicht. Spätestens mit Ollama und Deepseek ist es endgültig und unbestreitbar die absolute Hochtechnologie in allen Bereichen, was Software betrifft. Es ist auch für Unternehmen und Forschungseinrichtungen oder allgemein gesellschaftliche Player keine Frage mehr, ob man das lustige Anarcho-Nerd-Projekt unterstützt, sondern man muss es nutzen, will man irgendwie konkurrenzfähig bleiben. Selbst die deutschen Beamten fahren ihre Ochsenkarren bald mit Linux auch wenn man es ihnen nicht sagen wird, damit sie nicht aufwachen (die Geschichte lehrt uns, dass ein aufgewachter deutscher Beamter eine echte Gefahr für die umliegenden Gemeinden darstellt).

Konnte man als interessierter Freund der Bewegung vor 10 Jahren noch gut informiert sein, welche Projekte gerade am Start sind, ist das heute unmöglich. FOSS ist in alle Bereiche vorgedrungen und die Superschurken haben es nicht gemerkt. So super können die dann nicht sein. Wir haben die Macht übernommen, weil es eine ganz andere Macht ist als die klassischen Machtverhältnisse, die immer zentralisiert sind und waren. Man kann eine demokratische Welt bilden, ohne König, ohne Parlamente, ohne Plenum, und trotzdem oder gerade deswegen auf die einzelnen individuellen Dinge eingehen, auch wenn sie sich widersprechen sollten. Das ist eine vollkommen neue Art, die Welt zu betrachten, und wir sind dabei. Žižek hat vor der Umnachtung immer gesagt „Es kommt darauf an, ihnen die Eier abzuschneiden.“ Und irgendwann schauen sie an sich herunter und fragen sich, wo ihre Eier sind. Und obwohl es schon zu spät ist, haben sie ihre Kastrierung noch nicht mal bemerkt und zombien herum..
