The technical and design challenges of building the image editor of Immich, the popular open source alternative to Google Photos.
It's obviously a highly requested feature, especially for rotation, so what makes it so difficult? Well, it turns out that there are actually a lot of considerations that make it quite complicated.
Over the years, I’ve built up a massive photo collection of more than 200,000 images—scattered across too many drives and storage locations. I’ve finally consolidated them into my NextCloud, but it’s still a mess: tons of duplicates, multiple edits of the same photo, and redundant shots of the same subject that should have been sorted ages ago.
I’ve set up a PhotoPrism server, which is steadily (but slowly) scanning through my archive. So far, 9,000 images have been indexed, and it’s already helping me regain control. Once everything is in PhotoPrism, I’m excited to start using facial recognition (all on my own server, of course).
As someone who’s spent years shooting and developing analog film—including color and black-and-white—this digital cleanup feels like a new chapter. Can’t wait to rediscover what’s hidden in the archives.

I’ve cut out Meta entirely since ages and avoid Google where possible, but Apple Photos is the end boss. It’s not about replacing the storage of my photos, it’s the seamless experience of organizing, non-destructive editing, and syncing that’s hard to replace.
What’s the actual alternative that doesn’t feel like a downgrade?
If you’ve found a setup that works without sacrificing the seamless experience, please let me know.

@neil immich-go worked fantastically for me. Everything loaded super fast, but immich itself took quite a while to churn through everything.

Embarrassed to say I never finished this project. I blinked and it is two years later and it's partly to blame for my lack of DSLR photography. I want a stable workflow for organizing and backing up the photos I make. The other part is I've had a focus problem on the DSLR and I'm thinking it is my eyes not the camera or lens(es) but I would have thought autofocus would fix it and I'm not sure it did. More testing is needed.

How do people handle pictures for contacts in their phone? Most of mine are just the generic Google Contact image — the first initial in a colored circle. I grabbed a couple of photos from my Google Photos account for my wife and a few others, but do people these days actually take specific pictures of people just for contact photos?
I guess I’m just wondering how other people handle contact pictures, or if most people just don’t care.
