Two-fer.

The fishin' is good & the perches are plentiful along the Iowa River. Looks like they're mostly pulling shad from the waters below the Iowa River Power Dam.

Photograph of a juvenile American bald eagle in flight and an adult bald eagle perched on a branch with out of focus branches and a blue sky in the background. The juvenile is in the upper left frame and is flying to the right in profile. It has a fish in its left talons and has its wings swept up and back in preparation to land on a nearby branch. The adult eagle is in the lower left frame and is facing right in profile with its wings raised slightly due to the juvenile quick flyby and its has a fish grasp in its left talons. Bald eagles have brown body feathers, white head and tail feathers, clear light yellow-green eyes with large pupils, yellow-orange beaks that curve downward to a point, yellow-orange legs, and yellow-orange feet that end in sharp black talons. Juvenile eagles take 4-5 years to acquire their adult feathers. During that transition time the eagle's feathers begin brown and then become mottled brown and white prior to the adult stage with a white head and tail as well as a brown body. In addition to the mottled feathers this juvenile still has a mostly black beak indicating that it may be 1-2 yrs old.

The migratory eagle population visiting us is much shyer than the local eagles we have year round. So much so that I've gotten mostly flight photos so far. Hopefully I'll find a braver 1 or 2 so I can get closer for some more portraits 🤞.

This time of yr I typically see a few random waterfowl species that hang w/ the typical Canada geese/mallards at the nearby dam. This ♀ common goldeneye duck from Tuesday is a diving species. They are especially fun to watch 👍.

Counted ~30 eagles along a 1 mi stretch of the Iowa River yesterday. A nice woman on the trail informed me that there are more ~7-8 am. Said she stopped counting at 100.

All ages present now like this adult w/ a smidge of brown on the white.

Photograph of a pair of American bald eagles perched next to each other on the same large gray branch with out of focus branches and a blue sky in the background. The eagles are in the left frame and are turned to the right in profile. The eagle on the left appears to be an adult (5+ yrs) while the one on the right is a juvenile. Based on the brown and white mottled plumage, the juvenile may only be in its 1st or 2nd year. It takes 4-5 years for an eagle to acquire its adult feathers. During that transition time the eagle's feathers begin brown and then become mottled brown and white prior to the adult stage with a white head and tail as well as a brown body. Adult bald eagles have brown body feathers, white head and tail feathers, clear light yellow-green eyes with large pupils, yellow-orange beaks that curve downward to a point, yellow-orange legs, and yellow-orange feet that end in sharp black talons.Photograph of the same pair of bald eagles except in this photo the adult eagles has just launched itself off the branch and is flying downward. The juvenile is still perched on the branch which has shifted upwards due to the lower weight and the juvenile is using its wings and body to maintain balance while the branch comes to a new equilibrium. This photograph is similar to the last photo except the adult eagles is lower in the frame and the juvenile is still using its wings and body to adjust to the upward swing of the unburdened branch.

We're in the midst of a cold snap so sections of the Iowa river may freeze. That tends to push the wildlife to the open water below the dam which makes them easy pickings photo-wise. Headed down there tomorrow to see what the sitch is🤞

Extreme closeup photograph of a praying mantis (likely a Chinese mantis or Tenodera sinensis) peering around the side of a small group of conifer needles. Only the mantis's face is visible and it’s looking directly at the camera. Mantises have compound eyes that are fixed but can process data independently. While they do not have pupils they have pseudo-pupils (an optical effect created by the lens facets) that appear as dark dot on the eye surface. In this case the left pseudo-pupil appears to look directly forward while the right appears as if it is looking down to the left. This variety has a pale gray exoskeleton with darker markings. Mantis have long, tubular abdomens and thoraxes, six segmented legs, two long segmented antennae, two large, compound eyes that can move independently and are separated by what appears to be a square face plate which, along with its larger size, is indicative of the Chinese mantis species.
