scan: scrub in progress since Sun Feb 8 00:24:11 2026
8.54T scanned at 251M/s, 6.37T issued at 187M/s, 8.54T total
0B repaired, 74.57% done, 03:22:43 to go

Heya #zfs peeps--Klara just published an article of mine which goes over the basics of observability and monitoring of #openzfs systems. Including breadcrumbs leading you to a free to use web service and how to use it with #sanoid, if you're not feeling up to the challenge of running your own Nagios instance!

Hey #EO2026, you know how this works: find me, say hi, and this classy #OpenZFS sticker will be yours!

Can't find me? I'll definitely be in Room A (2B07) at 1:30pm. I'll be easy to spot - I'll be at the front with the microphone, talking about money.

(no charge for the sticker though 💚)

Next up for the #NextCloud deployment in the #HardenedBSD infrastructure: Backing up the VM storage to the NAS on a regular basis.

The VM's #OpenZFS zvol gets auto-snapshotted every 15 minutes, hour, day, week, month, and year.

I'm hoping to find something (suggestions welcome!) for something that can handle the zfs send part to the NAS but NOT handle the snapshotting itself.

Put another way: I want a tool I can use ONLY to run zfs send on an existing snapshot, sending it to a remote ssh host.

Or am I forced to use the same tool for both snapshotting and transfer?

so the other day i ran into an #openzfs bug (more details). i ended up having to evacuate like 30TB of data from the Big Pool on my nas, recreate the pool, restore the backups, but now all is well again! or at least it was on 4 january, when i drafted this.

in this case the strategy was to identify the corrupted files preventing send, delete them, take a snapshot -r of the whole pool, and send only that snapshot to some backup disks, while never destroying any other datasets or snapshots (because that could trigger the panic).

i have since reproduced the bug and distilled it into an actual regression test, landing my first openzfs patch :D https://github.com/openzfs/zfs/pull/18109

resilvering my Big Pool, after evacuating the data and bouncing it around a few timesleft: the seventy or so commands it took to initially reproduce the bug, a mix of zpool adds, zpool removes, zfs creates, zfs destroys, zfs snapshots, zfs sends, cp commands, rm commands, and dd commands. right: “Kernel panic - not syncing: segment already in tree; rs=000000005ed707c1”

kefir@desktop ~$ zfs clone -o mountpoint=/restore root/home/kefir@2026-01-14_00.00.03--5d root/restore
kefir@desktop ~$ cp /restore/trace ~/
kefir@desktop ~$ zfs destroy root/restore

kefir@desktop ~$ lsa trace

RE: mastodon.bsd.cafe/@stefano/115

There have been significant updates - and a further attempted breach.
I cannot disclose any details, as the investigation is still ongoing. I don't know all the details.

I can say, however, that ZFS was extremely helpful in ensuring the investigation could be opened.

#ZFS #AnyRAID #Storage #NAS #OpenZFS #LuuTr
