The EU's call for input on its Open Digital Ecosystem strategy got over 1600 responses, one of the highest numbers ever received.
You can read the #OSI's feedback here; We'll be sharing a blog post with you later this week that summarises it!

🎉 Happy 28th birthday, Open Source Initiative (OSI)!
Thank you for advocating the benefits of #opensource and helping build a world where everyone can enjoy the freedoms and opportunities of open source software. 💚🐧

Deb Bryant from #OSI closes with a warning against isolationism: "Please remember that Open Source has always been a global community, it brings me a lot of hope that we can collaborate together". Daniel Stenberg agrees: "With Open Source there are no borders".
#OSI's ED, Deb Bryant is now talking, "The best way to extract value from Open Source is to participate in it", says Deb.
Deb also highlights the financing challenges, in particular given layoffs in OSPOs at corporations who previously contributed significantly to Open Source projects, and highlights the need for changes in procurement to incentivise participation!
And now for a panel provocatively titled "Europe as the world's home for Open Source", moderated by the venerable James Lovegrove from Red Hat. #OSI is very well represented with our ED, Deb Bryant and board member and Apache President Ruth Suehle!
Y'all have probably seen the elections update:
https://opensource.org/blog/2026-osi-elections-update
So that the folks who elected me know, I will be stepping down from the board at the scheduled end of my term (this March), regardless of election changes.
They can sing in any key … as long as they walk right in there to the panel, sing a bar of _Alice's Restaurant_ and walk out.
If 50 people do it, #OSI might finally then see there is an #OpenSource Movement that wants transparent elections w/out ballot tampering!
> 🎶 You can get / anything you want / at Alice's Restaurant / (excepting #OpenSource fair elections) 🎶
(I'm leaving the sign/sing typo upthread & I know @jzb was good-natured, but dyslexia is embarrassing no matter what. 😬 )
I read the statement as an admission of error (in political speak). #OSI's by-laws created a self-perpetuating Board, & it has never been any different: elections were advisory, not binding.
This was the root cause of all the problems: folks hear “election” & think “my vote COUNTS!”. But it never did.
What's missing is remedy for the past. What happened in March 2025 mattered, & Step 0 is remedy for that. Doing the rest of what they propose as Step 1-N seems fine to me.

BTW, do see downthread where @jzb & I discuss recent news (like, today) about #OSI Elections being suspended for 2026.
While I literally had a door-to-door 24 hour travel cycle to get to #FOSDEM, I had not seen OSI's announcement when I wrote the above, but having caught up, it's all the more reason for folks to *sign the petition*. OSI is saying they want input from stakeholders about what happened & what to do next. You're the stakeholders; say so by singing:

Journalism is the 1ˢᵗ draft of history.
10 months ago, @lwn published¹ that 1ˢᵗ draft re: #OSI 2025 Board of Directors elections.
At @fosdem, @jzb'll moderate a panel writing the 2ⁿᵈ draft of history of OSI's ballot tampering & related shenanigans.
Time remains to sign the petition: Ask #OpenSource Initiative to release the real election results: https://codeberg.org/OSI-Concerns/election-results-2025
& If you're at #FOSDEM, visit UB5.230 on SAT at 17:00² for the panel!

As a former elected Board member, I support this 100%. One problem with an elected Board is that it doesn't assure that the needed competencies are available at the Board level. Over time the OSI added more and more appointed Board members to address this problem, but it is time to reconsider the full process #FOSS #OSI #OpenSource #HealthyCommunities

The Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model is a conceptual framework from the ISO that standardizes network communication into seven distinct layers, enabling diverse systems to communicate
Layer 7 - Application: Enables user-facing applications (browsers, email) to access network services.
Layer 6 - Presentation: Translates, encrypts, and compresses data for the application layer to use.
Layer 5 - Session: Manages sessions (connections) between applications, handling authentication and reconnection.
Layer 4 - Transport: Handles end-to-end communication, including flow control, segmentation, and error correction (TCP/UDP).
Layer 3 - Network: Determines the best physical path for data, managing logical addressing and routing (IP).
Layer 2 - Data Link: Responsible for node-to-node data transfer, error detection, and MAC addressing.
Layer 1 - Physical: Defines the physical specifications, such as cables, connectors, and voltage for transmitting raw bits.
@bufalo1973 @Rataunderground siempre me pregunto si hay posibilidad de tener algún apoyo jurídico de la #FSF o de la #OSI, creo que por eso existen como organizaciones y colectivo de usuarios.
I bloggered a post.
It's about shortcomings of FLOSS and a possible next thing.

@webvision Die Annahmen wie Open Source mehrheitlich funktionieren würde darin mal jetzt nicht in Frage stellend, allerdings einige Fragen und Anmerkungen:
Anthropic suppresses the AGPL-3.0 in Claude's outputs via content filtering.
I've reached out to them via support for a rationale, because none of the explanations that I can think of on my own are charming.
The implications of a coding assistant deliberately influencing license choice is ... concerning.

@Kroc Governance in the case of #Mozilla (and #LinuxFoundation, #OSI, ...) is the big technology companies who have bought influence.
