#NoDig

This production line will put out several thousand seedlings of 200 varieties this year (alone 200+ tomato seedlings).
They go into ~600 m2 of veg garden that provides for my family, the family owning the land and some more.
We are self-sufficient with potatoes, onions, garlic, brassicas, herbs and many other vegs and salads.
It takes roughly 300 hours a year to tend the garden.
Everything is organic and #NoDig

February 14, 2026. Reporting from the southern Minnesota composting space. The compost was covered last fall to moderate the temperatures to get more days of biological action. This compost is frozen solid for our gardening friends in warmer places. The space is a three bin space with imaginary dividers. This works well for managing the materials with a pitchfork. #Zone4b, #compost, #nodig, #compostodon, #minnesota

We look down on white ice on dark compost. Leek greens are visible. Red oak leaves are visible. The upper right has a frozen mysterious slurry.

@feinschmeckergarten Excellent. Your gardening methods have been helpful for years. No till helps the creatures overwinter too. Our locality has row crop farming mixed with wood lots, wide drainage features with willows and seasonal hay making. Therefore woods edge birds and the insects they eat have habitat. However, remnant tallgrass prairie bird habitat is rare. This locale was the edge of deciduous woods and oak prairie savanna in the times before Europeans. #nodig, #Zone4b

Winter veg in the raised bed. I’m grateful for our temperate climate here and the variety of veg we can grow, however slowly.

The bed gets residual heat from the house wall which helps but we’ve only had one week of frosts and a couple of days of snow so far this winter. No nights colder than -5°C.
#GrowYourOwn #HomeGrown #NoDig #Solarpunk

A raised bed along the side of a house. It’s a rectangular box that’s netted with three doorways at regular intervals down the side. The door panels are also all netted. The net keeps out the pigeons and butterflies.

Each doorway opens onto a kneeling space where the entire bed in front and to the sides can be reached and worked without compacting the soil. The design is influenced by keyhole beds in permaculture.

It also means the beds can be worked without ever blocking the access pathway alongside the bed.

There are a lot of veg plants growing in the beds: kale, cabbage, bulls blood beetroot leaves, mooli, komatsuna, garlic chives, spring onions, pak choi, winter spinach, green wave mustard, land cress, Chinese cabbage, ischikrona bunching onions, golden frills mustard, cavolo nero kale, root parsley, Sicilian giant radish, green in snow mustard, Osaka purple mustard, mizuna, mibuna, purslane, winter radish, Japanese wintering onions and chicory. A brindle boxer dog is walking on the path alongside the raised bed with his head down.

We love this variety. We are done shucking dried beans from the 2025 garden season. These lovely heritage beans are the Hidatsa Shield variety. The bean variety is from the Indian tribes of the Missouri River in North Dakota. The supplier is Seed Savers Exchange of Decorah, Iowa. We had hundreds of the lighter color pattern and a surprise with a few of the darker color. #nativeplants, #minnesota, #growyourown, #nodig, #gardening

Two plates of dried beans. The center plate holds scores of plump egg shaped beans with a two tone pattern. The smaller upper plate holds several beans with a darker pattern.

@Broadfork Smiling. Is the white layer an unexpected guest? The white layer is a lovely blanket in a southern Minnesota winter season. The ecosystem underneath the snow keeps rodents active and foraging, it protects plant crowns from the harmful temperature swings. It reduces soil moisture loss and wind erosion. Conversely the soil ecosystem suffers degradations when the climate crisis melts all the snow cover away. #nodig, #minnesota, #nativeplants

@Broadfork It’s good to see greenery. It appears the wait for free windows was a success. #nodig

I am moving from mastodon.art to mastodon.social. I'm currently doing more gardening than art. Trying to set up a garden.

December 30, 2025. The runner ducks are foraging during the mild afternoon. They are trooping through the new snow looking around the stems of the raspberries, asters, witch hazel and such. They vocalize excitement at the possibility of foraged food. This is five of eleven. Everyone has molted. They are healthy and happy the days are getting longer. #minnesota, #ducksofmastodon,#growyourown, #composting, #nodig

We see five slender ducks walking to the right. The left one is gray, the three in the middle are fawn, the right one is dark. The white snow is splooting out under their webbed feet.

December 27, 2025. The garden seeds arrived! The photograph has a few interesting varieties. Purple cabbages were successful in 2025. We will expand with the Copenhagen variety. The rocket arugula will be planted in many more spots than last year. The Suyo Long cucumbers produced all growing season. They are back. It’s a big carrot year in the spiral notebook planning. We added a summer squash for fun. And we added another Arikara bean variety. #gardening, #minnesota, #nodig, #Zone4b

Two rows of four rectangular seed packages on the counter. Each with a seed saver exchange lettering. And colorful vegetables.

As well as the home made compost I also have a bin of Korean Natural Farming IMO4 inside the shed, a worm bin at home in the garage and a bokashi bin to take any unwanted cooked food waste. And there’s a pile of leaf litter turning slowly into leaf mould.

Composting can happen in many guises. I wish more people embraced it in their own lives. We live in an exceptionally wasteful world fast losing our natural biodiversity. #Compost #Composting #NoDig #SoilHealth #Gardening #Allotment #Solarpunk

@Broadfork Thank you for sharing all the different December compost. And your plan is to use the very best of the compost for the soil blocks for starts. The Mastodon composting enthusiasts inspired us to get buckets of compost inside before it’s frozen. This will be our third winter of this step and our second season using soil blocks for the vegetable starts. Thanks all. #compost, #nodig, #minnesota.

This is my composting set up over winter. We are fortunate our winters are mild. The piles are unlikely to freeze.

The two palleted compost bays have been freshly turned.

Four compost Daleks contain maturing compost.

Another compost dalek recieves the weekly veg peelings and garden weeds with sawdust added over the top.

After taking the photos all the compost was covered or lids put back on to keep the rain off. #Compost #Composting #NoDig #Mulch #Gardening #Allotment #Solarpunk

Two compost bays are made from five pallets. Two pallets provide the back wall and three pallets at right angles make the left side, right side and centre divide of the two bays. Two piles of compost are dark brown. The left hand pile has three black downpipes down the centre line to allow air flow into the centre of the pile. The right side pile is older compost and is noticeably more broken down.Three different sized plastic bins or compost daleks each contain maturing compost. The lids are off to show the compost inside. An elongated oval bin contains the best, finest compost which has been sieved with a trommel. These three containers of compost will mature over winter and will be the base of the potting mix next spring.Another compost dalek showing the compost inside. The brown compost has some woody material visible in amongst it. It hasn’t been put through the trommel to sieve it yet. It will continue to mature in this bin over winter.A compost dalek nearly full of the fresher garden and kitchen waste. Handfuls of sawdust are applied with each layer of kitchen scraps every week. When this bin is full it will be turned into a different bin to continue to break down. Ground eggshells, basalt, biochar and other amendments are occasionally added to this bin in small quantities.
