What is a number? When you think of the concept, what do think of? Answer in the poll!
In your conception, is this kind of number fundamental, or do you feel that it relies on something more fundamental? If so, is that simply a standard construction (like the rationals from the integers) or something different?

The beginners number theory book I'm working through is asking me to prove a result X.

The author's solution does it using other results that themselves are derived from X.

This does not seem right.

Comprehensive presentation of the "Theorem of the Day", starting with a statement of this theorem.

Zeckendorf’s Theorem : Every positive integer may be represented in a unique way as a sum of distinct non-consecutive Fibonacci numbers. More precisely, given the sequence of distinct Fibonacci numbers: F1 = 1, F2 = 2 and, for k ≥ 3, F_k = F_(k−1) + F_(k−2), and given any positive integer N, there is a unique, finite binary string b_1 b_2 . . . b_t, t ≥ 1, having no consecutive ones, such that N = ∑_(i=1)^t b_i F_i.
