First published in 2000, Linux Format quickly became the magazine many turned to for Linux tutorials, distro reviews, and open source news. For two and a half decades it offered practical guides, experiments with Raspberry Pi, sysadmin tips, and deep dives into tools that shaped the Linux world.
With its final issue in mid 2025, Linux Format leaves behind a legacy of helping countless readers discover, learn, and grow within the community. While its printing has ended, the spirit of sharing knowledge that defined the magazine lives on in the people it inspired.
Just reading the final #LinuxFormat and it's REALLY weird.
The intro doesn't mention that it's the last issue. The "Join the Revolution" article about how they've been publishing for 25 years doesn't directly address that it's the last issue (there's just "Farewell" in the top-right of each page and "Will the last person to leave please please turn out the lights?").
They're kinda closing but kinda sidestepping it as well.

Oh. I had no idea that #LinuxFormat was ending publication until I read the last issue! That’s sad.
#linuxformat Magazine will cease to exist. In the past 25 years 329 editions where published.
I've read every issue during my Bachelor as we had this subscription at our library.
I will greatly miss it.
After 25 years, Issue 329 of the Linux Format magazine will be their very last. While this magazine predates my existence as a human, I have read some of their issues and they were one of the few magazines I genuinely enjoyed reading.
Farwell and thanks for your service.

Kiintoisaa lukemista meille Linux-wanhuksille ja ehkä muillekin: Brittiläinen Linux Format -lehti on pannut kaikkien aikojen ensimmäisen numeronsa toukokuulta 2000 ilmaiseksi nettiin. https://linuxformat.com/files/pdfs/LXF001.pdf
Arkistossa https://linuxformat.com/archives?listpdfs=1 on muutamia muitakin vanhoja numeroita luettavissa.
Nooooo! They're closing Linux Format magazine 😞
I mean, sure, it had got a bit "hardware-y" recently with the mouse reviews and wifi reviews and stuff. But they'd just started a series of tutorials on security. And the computing history articles were interesting. And you didn't have to wade through all the shit on Reddit/Hacker News/people who think videos are a good way to communicate most stuff.
The final issue of #linuxformat has been released. After 25 years the magazine is going out with a bang. Interviewing the old staff members, and looking back at old Linux distros (Corel Linux, I used that a long time ago. I've been with LXF since 2011 (writing the community page) and freelancing with them since 2013. The Raspberry Pi User section started with the Pi 2, and it carried on til the very end.

Sad to see that Linux Format has come to an end, though it outlived PC Format. I still enjoy reading paper magazines but I feel like soon there will be none left (one of my investing magazines hinted at going digital only but quickly backtracked). I would probably pay for a printed compilation of LWN for example (yes I could subscribe and print articles but I value the skills of an editor and typesetter).
Is it the end for #LinuxFormat? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_Format #linux #futurepublishing
On the one hand, I feel it's really important to download the #LinuxFormat PDFs that I get because I'm a subscriber.
On the other hand, I'm not entirely convinced that I've EVER gone back and looked at them 😐
Looks like Linux Format magazine isn't on Mastodon (that I can find).
I possibly shouldn't be surprised by this, but their "AI" issue is an absolute mess.
Not only is there the breathless extolling of the wonders of LLMs (like it being able to answer questions - which it can't do consistently if you want correct answers), but I've just read the article on Firefox and they're suggesting setting up a VPN, and they say that the VPN encryption protects your privacy from the VPN provider as well, which is VERY EXPLICITLY DOES NOT!
They probably got an LLM to write half of the articles. Confidently but wrong 🙄
Just cancelled my Linux Format subscription. Haven't read any of the issues for months (just due to time), and now with the latest one mentioning OpenAI, I'm out.
I am so honoured to have a 5 page interview in #LinuxFormat this month! Thanks so much for the team at Future for being interested in the work of Fyne Labs and the @fyne GUI toolkit for #golang.
Even more amazing they mentioned it on the front page!!!

Well, I couldn't splash out in the black Friday sales, but I did bag a #PiPicoW and a breakout board from #ThePiHut!
However, I would like to highlight that even without the bf discount, The PiHut was still cheaper than the same things being sold on Amazon and eBay!
Anyway, order placed... Later, while reading my techy magazine (Linux Format, issue 322), what do I find but a small python project for a Pi Pico W (and an LCD display). Clearly my buy was approved by the Universe ☺️
