There’s no better cure for the late-winter blues than a trip to Altamont Gardens in County Carlow. Here’s another pic of the wonderful snowdrops there last week. 🌿🤍🇮🇪

A vertical, eye-level shot taken in a woodland setting at Altamont Gardens. The foreground is filled with a dense carpet of white snowdrops and occasional pink hellebores rising from green grass. To the left, large, thick tree trunks—likely beech—are covered in vibrant green moss. The background shows a depth of tangled bare branches and evergreen yew trees under a soft, diffuse, white-grey sky, creating a moody but peaceful winter atmosphere.

It’s wild to think that mushrooms are just the "fruit" of the organism. The real work is happening underground in a vast web of mycelium, breaking down dead leaves to feed the forest.

A low-angle, close-up shot of a pale white mushroom growing from a bed of brown, dry leaves on a forest floor. The mushroom has a flat cap that dips slightly in the centre, revealing prominent, delicate gills underneath. The stem is off-white and sturdy. The background is a soft blur of dark tree trunks and bright green foliage, with dappled sunlight creating a circular bokeh effect. The atmosphere is damp and earthy.

A moody, atmospheric view inside a dense forest. Dark, silhouetted tree trunks and tangled bare branches fill the frame, creating a chaotic but beautiful natural texture. Bright, golden sunlight bursts through the gaps in the wood, creating a misty, ethereal glow and distinct sunbeams that cut through the darkness. The lighting is high contrast, emphasising the warmth of the light. A graphic overlay at the bottom displays the text "Word of the Day: apricity" alongside the Pocket Ireland logo.

A vertical close-up photograph of a young evergreen tree branch. The sharp green needles are coated in white frost. The branch is backlit by bright winter sunlight, causing the ice crystals to sparkle and creating a glowing rim light around the needles. The background is a soft, out-of-focus blur of dark forest trees and a pale sky. Text at the bottom reads "Word of the Day: hyemal" alongside the Pocket Ireland logo and website address.

The "tunnel" effect here actually acts as a natural sound dampener with the dense layers of needles and branches absorbing sound.. Ballinastoe Woods can be soooo quiet and peaceful!

#photography #EastCoastKin #Ballinastoe #Wicklow #IrishNature #Forest #Trees #MoodyGrams #NaturePhotography #Ireland
A vertical photograph looking down a dark forest path. The path is flanked by tall, dense coniferous trees. The lower branches are bare, dark, and tangled, creating a tunnel-like archway overhead that fills the frame. The scene is dimly lit, but bright, golden daylight shines through the opening at the far end of the path and filters down from the very top of the canopy, highlighting the texture of the woven branches.

Frost on the glass, a robin in the bean bed.
Many of Ireland’s garden birds are now on red or orange lists — still singing, but fewer each year.

Feeders, water, ivy, hedges: small acts that hold the line through winter.

The Tiered Beauty of O’Sullivan’s Cascade

One of the highlights of a recent trip to Killarney was discovering O’Sullivan’s Cascade. There’s a 1.7 km walk from your car to the falls, but it’s worth it as the area is lovely.

The Forest Guardian

Early Saturday morning a few weeks ago we gathered to photograph deer as the sun rose. Walking through the forest in Killarney National Park we spotted a group of deer. The light was terrible. I’m sure this was shot at ISO 12800 to get a crisp image and I’m really happy with it.

This group of deer stayed in the forest away from curious humans for the rest of the morning, though we could hear this stag bellowing several times off in the distance.
