Look what arrived in the post: New Directions in Digital Textual Studies, expertly and diligently edited by Christopher Ohge and Kristen Schuster. My chapter on "Unlocking Literary Heritage: From Cabinets of Curiosity to Digital Storytelling" is surrounded by the work of a bunch of really terrific scholars. @peterwebster Peter Webster, Mary Erica Zimmer, Leah Henrickson and Dirk Van Hulle, to name just a few.

I'm working on three papers in parallel now. The big one is about Late Bronze Age stone (!) axes. Then there's a medium one about the Äversta bog sacrificial site from c AD 200 to 1000. And finally a note about the Viking Period and Medieval location of Erstavik Manor, of whose old land my wife and I own just enough for a small house.

The Journal of Open Humanities Data charges 915 GBP to publish a single paper! I think this is excessive and personally don't find the breakdown of costs that they publish convincing (see below). Hence I will not be submitting a paper that would have been an excellent fit for their upcoming special issue. Never mind!

APC Cost Breakdown

In order to establish trust with authors, institutions and funders, we provide a transparent breakdown of how the APC is calculated. The framework used follows the structure created by the FAIR Open Access Alliance (FOAA. p3), as recommended by Plan S, thus ensuring that all Ubiquity Press journals are compliant with key open access funder requirements.

The table below shows how the publishing costs are broken down (2023 data).
Discounts & Waivers	10%
Journal Operations	44%
Publication	14%
Fees	0%
Communication	2%
General	30%

Definitions for each of these categories, along with the Ubiquity Press average APC breakdown can be found at https://www.ubiquitypress.com/site/publish/.

@apparebit @microglyphics yeah, I thought that bridged things nicely.

Of course, it's a gradient. It helps to explain those that don't leave platforms. Some, anyway.

I did toss Cavafy in too because of the liminality of it all, and his poems show a lived in liminality that describes it from within.

are useful. 🙃

For my parents generation, people born during the 1930s, mass consumption of music and other arts became the norm.

Instead of playing music being social being something that unites us, the consumption of music and art became an identity marker, a signal of status, of wealth.

And since the stories about music and the arts are written for mass consumption, they only focus on famous people, their hubris, betrayals, and their tragedies.

From cradle to grave, we have been trained as commodified people, taught the pseudo-science of Social Darwinism as self-evident human nature.

The isolation of relentless competition for status and wealth now defines many relationships, and so define arts.

For thousands of years most art was folk art, that was its purpose, its function; it was already naturally “democratized”.

I am excited to present @galaxyfreiburg in a panel of #LoveDataweek with my colleagues from the Central Data Facility and the DH Lab next week:

What counts as “research data” in the humanities? How can we get and responsibly manage that data?

Join us for an interactive talk that answers these questions and introduces you to different institutions at the University of Freiburg to help you with your research data analysis.

Island-hopping in Sweden: an enchanted maze of tiny isles – only a bus ride from Gothenburg

Academia.edu emailed me today asking, "Cindy Weinstein ✏️ Did you write "The Scarlet Letter"? The absurdity, idiocy, and utter inaccuracy of this cracks me up (and worries me a little for sure). Would that it were true, but I only wrote the introduction to the Oxford Classics edition.
