#FileFormats

2026-01-30

I got into an almost-argument and I need advice and/or guidance from you dorks (affectionate).

Some doop on Reddit says he rips his CDs into flac files. I said the only thing that flacs increase in this regard is file size; not quality. He insists they sound better as flacs.

So, I ripped two CDs on my l33t h8xor Linux PC. 192kbps mp3s, and flacs. I genuinely could not tell the difference on any of my headphones, including the planar magnetic supernerd audiogasm cans. And I mean it: Zero difference.

Have I fallen into confirmation bias, or is there a real difference?

Do you think custom text file formats are a good idea? or should we just always use JSON/YAML/TOML?

New blog post on The Signal because who doesn't want new/updated format descriptions for the holidays! New entries for APNG and YAML (rhymes with camel and you are welcome for that knowledge drop) and some updates for MXF, PNG and PDF variants (incl PDF/A-4e and PDF/A-4f). #digipres #fileformats

✨Bringing light to #FileFormats

Tough on the outside with food for thought inside!
File formats reveal a lot about the different meanings of an object.
CPP-008 and CPP-010 help you uncover them through #FileFormatIdentification and #FileFormatValidation:

@Etnaphele for those that shoot and spend time editing raw files, what do you do to your pictures?

I don't think I've touched a single raw #photo file in 2025 so far.

Sure, we've all seen Mark YAML and even JSON Statham, but have y'all met TOML Holland yet?

Ah, the "Binary Formats Gallery"—because what the world really needed was a for file formats, complete with GraphViz diagrams and hex dump visualizers! 🤓🖥️ I mean, who doesn't want to spend their Sunday afternoon compiling Kaitai Struct libraries just to admire the metadata of a Quake 2 model? 🌟🔍

Revisiting bsdiff as a tool for digital preservation

by @beet_keeper

I introduced bsdiff in a blog in 2014. bsdiff compares the differences between two files, e.g. broken_file_a and corrected_file_b and creates a patch that can be applied to broken_file_a to generate a byte-for-byte match for corrected_file_b.

On the face of it, in an archive, we probably only care about corrected_file_2 and so why would we care about a technology that patches a broken file?

In all of the use-cases we can imagine the primary reasons are cost savings and removing redundancy in file storage or transmission of digital information. In one very special case we can record the difference between broken_file_a and corrected_file_b and give users a totally objective method of recreating corrected_file_b from broken_file_a providing 100% verifiable proof of the migration pathway taken between the two files.

Image shows two layered waveforms, one a corrupt waveform and the other a good original. The corrupt form is in red and the uncorrupt one is green.Image shows one corrupted file side-by-side with its non-corrupted partner through the lens of a diff tool. The differences are highlighted on the command line in red and green.Image shows a hexdump with non-null bytes colorized making it easier to see differences, and ultimately how sparse the data is in the file.

They really fucked up with the new #fileformats. Why even call it #webp. Just put the #png extension on it and no one would have to know if you made it backward compatible, your moronic apes. Just put #jpeg at the end of #jxl files.

Dumbass engineers they should hire me. I could have told them this.

Ah, , the digital hipster's favorite minimalist coffee shop disguised as a database engine ☕📚. Who knew file formats could be romanticized with so much technical jargon that even the table of contents needs its own table of contents? 😜✨ Just remember, if it's small, fast, AND reliable, you're probably dreaming—or reading SQLite's wishful documentation. 🚀

JSONL now supported by JSONID and the first two JSONL rulesets making 80 strong in the registry. JSON, YAML, TOML, fully enabled. Check it out here:

War of the Worlds might be a must movie for data nerds. The trailer alone "Data is their food"!!

It's like someone saw ID4 and said, yeah, I get it, the Aliens really can understand arbitrary data streams -- let's go all in on that!

A solid 2/10 stars -- but in a good way!!

(Although, maybe try and ignore some of the amazon stuff -- in their wildest dreams they're surviving the apocalypse)

@rodolforg @davidrevoy How about Portable Document Format (PDF)? It can hold layers, which can be shown or hidden as desired. Put the comic image on a bottom layer, then translation texts in various languages on front layers. #comics #i18n #FileFormats

I have three .avi files that have identical size but different md5sum.

A simple binary diff tells me that there are a couple of single-byte differences. Is there some kind of tool that would allow me to tell what those differences amount to? (Video, audio, whatever else?)

EDIT: SOLVED, see below

New blog post about the Library of Congress 2025-2026 updates to the Recommended Formats Statement (RFS). A few changes to note related to Design and 3D formats (mostly just rescoping), updates to email-related metadata to better align with EA-PDF and continued work to document digital accessibility support in file formats listed as "acceptable" in the RFS. See the Change Log for all updates. Comments welcome! #fileformats #digipres blogs.loc.gov/thesignal/2025/0
