Interestingly, they have a Minister for Digitalisation. They start with LibreOffice, "with a full transition to open-source software by the end of the year."

Motivations are (licensing) costs and political tensions, to protect data and reduce reliance on foreign tech.

Of course MS can waive the upcoming licensing costs, and they might return to US tech dependency. But many governments are now making similar, or more audacious transitions.

I wonder why the Danes didn't yet join the EDIC for Digital Commons? There's important shared investments being made, e.g. in collaborative workspaces...

Today in The Hague, the #DigitalCommons #EDIC’s official launch is taking place—a consortium designed to strengthen Europe’s shared capacity to develop, maintain, and scale essential digital infrastructure.

We have been engaged in the effort from its earliest stages, contributing experience in building structures that sustain open, interoperable technologies. Our managing director, Adriana Groh, spoke at today’s event on the panel “Future Strategies for the Digital Commons EDIC.”

@MichaelB Oh, that’s really interesting—and yes, Germany’s approach can be pretty fragmented because of federalism, right?
From what I’ve seen, Schleswig-Holstein is indeed moving toward open source, which is great news! But as you pointed out, many other states and municipalities are still heavily reliant on Microsoft—and now even Palantir (yikes!).
I only translated that article about the European Digital Infrastructure Consortium (#EDIC) and didn’t dig much deeper, so I’m not entirely sure whether the Federal Republic of Germany as a whole is officially part of it yet. @rriemann might have more insights—maybe they can clarify?

Does anyone else have updates on Germany’s open-source transition? It feels like such a mixed bag right now—some places are leading the way, while others are doubling down on proprietary software.
Have you seen any other German states making progress with FOSS? I’d love to hear more success stories!

P.S. #Palantir in public administration? Could you share some sources for that? That’s a huge red flag if I’ve ever seen one… 🚩
