#Consolation

I remember the nights when the city lights slipped through the cracks in the curtains, painting playful, crooked shadows on the walls. We’d talk for hours, joyfully unraveling the world, the universe, and the sheer wonder of being. I’d tease your beliefs and challenge your assumptions, and somehow, in all that laughter and curiosity, we found consolation. Those were the times!

we thought nothing of it

always moved on in the past

Now that we've achieved stagnation

The Inferiority Complex

The hardest decision that I had to make in my life so far was labeling myself selfish for being structurally unable to meet the people that everybody else in my community already knows well. I am meant to be famous, and everyone around me with the exception of my direct authorities would agree. However, after never receiving the natural opportunities that would allow me to network with peers that everybody else gets to network to, I would decide that I am a lesser person for my missed […]

Quote of the day, 15 September: St. Elizabeth of the Trinity

I come to you by passing through the pierced Heart of the Mother of Sorrows.

Saint Elizabeth of the Trinity
Letter 312 to Madame Anthès

Note: The envelope has been preserved, postmarked Dijon, “9–18, 1906, at 8 P.M.” Baroness d’Anthès had just lost her daughter, Mme. de Maizières, and received this consoling note from St. Elizabeth. We can assume that Letter 313 to Mme. de Sourdon (the deceased woman’s sister) was sent the same day. St. Elizabeth shared a close friendship with the de Sourdon family—indeed, one of the saint’s final letters was a spiritual testament to Mme. de Sourdon, written less than two weeks before Elizabeth’s own death.

Quote of the day, 29 April: Brother Lawrence

What consoles me in this life is that I see God by faith. And I see him in such a way that I can sometimes say, “I no longer believe, I see, for I experience what faith teaches.” With this assurance, and by this practice of faith, I will live and die with him.

Where in my life is God inviting me to trust Him so deeply that I begin to “see” by faith?

A quotation from Baldwin, James:

«
But what is happening in the poor [white] woman, the poor [white] man’s mind is this: they’ve been raised to believe, and by now they helplessly believe, that no matter how terrible their lives may be, and their lives have been quite terrible, and no matter how far they fall, no matter what disaster overtakes them, they…

Boèce, La Consolation de Philosophie

Scripture Reading: Matthew 5:1–11

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

“Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

“Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

“Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.”

St. Teresa Speaks: The Book of Her Life, 12:5

Keeping Christ present is what we of ourselves can do. Whoever would desire to pass beyond this point and raise the spirit to an experience of spiritual consolations that are not given would lose both the one and the other, in my opinion; for these consolations belong to the supernatural. And if the intellect is not active, the soul is left very dry, like a desert.

Reflection: Humility in God’s Presence

Teresa warns against seeking spiritual consolations for their own sake. True humility acknowledges that any progress in prayer comes not from our efforts, but from God’s grace. When we rely on our own abilities, we risk being left spiritually dry, like a desert. How often do we pursue spiritual feelings instead of pursuing God himself? Teresa calls us to humble ourselves and recognize that all spiritual growth is a gift from God, not something we can manufacture through effort.

Novena Prayer

O Holy Mother Saint Teresa, look down from heaven and see: visit this vine and protect what thy right hand hath planted.

(Mention your intentions)

Merciful God, who by thy Spirit didst raise up thy servant Saint Teresa of Jesus to reveal to thy Church the way of perfection: grant that her teaching may awaken in us a longing for holiness until, assisted by her intercession, we attain to the perfect union of love in Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord; who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

Our Father…

Hail Mary…

Glory be…

Saint Teresa of Avila, pray for us!

Today's poem:

Zeus
- by Aeschylus

O Zeus, who e'er Thou be,
If that name please thee well,
By that I call on Thee;
For weighing all things else I fail to tell
Of any name but Zeus;
If once for all I seek
Of all my haunting, troubled thoughts a truce,
That name I still must speak.

O master grant that I may never seek so much to be consoled, as to console; to be understood, as to understand; to be loved, as to love with all my soul.

Do not believe I am swimming in consolations; oh, no, my consolation is to have none on earth. Without showing Himself, without making His voice heard, Jesus teaches me in secret; it is not by means of books, for I do not understand what I am reading.

Sometimes a word comes to console me, such as this one which I received at the end of prayer (after having remained in silence and aridity):

“Here is the teacher whom I am giving you; he will teach you everything that you must do. I want to make you read in the book of life, wherein is contained the science of LOVE” [Words of Our Lord to St. Margaret Mary].

The science of Love, ah, yes, this word resounds sweetly in the ear of my soul, and I desire only this science. Having given all my riches for it, I esteem it as having given nothing as did the bride in the sacred canticles [Song 8:7]. I understand so well that it is only love that makes us acceptable to God, that this love is the only good I ambition.

Jesus deigned to show me the road that leads to this divine furnace, and this road is the surrender of the little child who sleeps without fear in its father’s arms. “Whoever is a little one, let him come to me” [Prov 9:4]. So speaks the Holy Spirit through the mouth of Solomon.

This same Spirit of Love also says: “For to him that is little, mercy will be shown” [Wis 6:6]. The prophet Isaiah reveals in His name that on the last day: “God shall feed his flock like a shepherd; he shall gather together the lambs with his arm, and shall take them up in his bosom” [Is 40:11].

As though these promises were not sufficient, this same prophet whose gaze was already plunged into the eternal depths cried out in the Lord’s name: “As one whom a mother caresses, so will I comfort you; you shall be carried at the breasts and upon the knees they will caress you” [Is 66:12–13].

After having listened to words such as these, dear godmother, there is nothing to do but to be silent and to weep with gratitude and love. Ah! if all weak and imperfect souls felt what the least of souls feels, that is, the soul of your little Thérèse, not one would despair of reaching the summit of the mount of love.

Jesus does not demand great actions from us but simply surrender and gratitude.
