Shasta Storm

Mt Shasta is one of many volcanic peaks in California and is at the southern end of the Cascade Range. At 14, 179 feet it is also the second highest peak in the cascade range.
Captured on a drive into California from Southern Oregan. The sky was clear for hundreds of miles except for this large cloud that seemed to get hung up on the peak of the mountain.

Shasta Storm

A towering Mount Shasta rises like a silent titan, its snow‑washed slopes glowing beneath a break in the storm. Dark, muscular clouds coil around the peak, their edges lit with a cold, electric brightness that hints at the power gathering within. The air feels charged—crisp, metallic, and alive—like the moment just before thunder rolls. Below, the land stretches out in deep greens and muted earth tones, grounding the drama above. The contrast between the serene mountain and the swirling tempest creates a breathtaking tension, inviting viewers to feel the raw pulse of nature. This is a piece that brings atmosphere into a room—majestic, moody, and unforgettable.

Prominently displayed on the top left is "Rainier National Park," with a logo for Northern Pacific Railroad at the bottom right corner accompanied by their motto, which suggests pride or support from another organization, possibly related to conservation or advocacy.

A view of Mount Rainier as seen from Chinook Pass.

Mount Rainier National Park, Washington State – 2025

A striking view of Mount Rainier as seen from Chinook Pass. The foreground is filled with tall evergreen trees rising dark and sharp against the light, with their spires reaching toward the sky. Behind them stretches a rugged ridgeline of rocky crags and forested slopes, their gray and green textures adding depth to the scene. Beyond the ridges, Mount Rainier dominates the horizon, its massive dome blanketed in snow and ice under a flawless, cloudless blue sky. The composition highlights the contrast between the dense forest, jagged mid-mountains, and the monumental white summit in the distance.

I wish I were a geologist just so I could do all the long-overdue research on Washington’s own Glacier Peak volcano (and become a mountaineer in the process, I guess). It’s amazing how little is known about it. But kind of understandable, too, since it’s embedded in the remote Cascades.

I’ve finally officially laid eyes on #GlacierPeak/#Dakobed, the 5th of Washington State’s 5 stratovolcanoes. It’s just hiding in plain sight, among the #CascadeRange peaks NE of #Seattle and actually visible from the city on good days. A magnificent, slumbering monster, capable of the same sort of violence as #MountStHelens/#WyEast, but so remote that it’s only been possible to install one monitoring station so far.

Every #volcano deserves our respect, awe, and reverence.

Pregaming for this PNW move by watching a Nick Zentner lecture about the Pacific Northwest's ghost volcanoes. He is so good.

EDIT: delightfully nerdy, fairly accessible, and funny. He's a great teacher. youtube.com/watch?v=6H18xVnb14

The Hinman Glacier, in the Cascades east of Seattle, is now no more. It's the "biggest North Cascade glacier to completely disappear."

This #whale-sized #marine #reptile in the #RoyalTyrrellMuseum is the #ichthyosaur Shastasaurus sikkaniensis. Unusually, it was not only one of the earliest members of its group, but one of the very largest. Its #species name comes from where it was found, along the Sikanni Chief River which flows out of the #RockyMountains of #BritishColumbia 🇨🇦. Its #genus name comes from Mt. #Shasta in the #CascadeRange, where other species of this Triassic titan have been found.
