How do field biologists in dense tropical forests photograph the fruits and leaves of very tall trees from the ground?

Was lucky and am very proud to collaborate with three colleagues Heidi Meudt, Sabine von Mering and Joaquim Santos to produce a paper on #Wikidata and #botanists A blog about our collaboration can be found here. blog.tepapa.govt.nz/2025/07/14

Scientists Uncover #NewSpecies of Sunflower in Big Bend National Park, Texas calacademy.org/press/releases/ paper by Debra Manley et al. phytokeys.pensoft.net/article/

"The 'wooly devil' is the 1st new plant genus discovered in a US national park in ~50 years... The plant was first observed by park volunteer Deb Manley, who promptly uploaded the unknown species to #iNaturalist, where an international community of #botanists assembled to identify the mysterious flower"

"In 1941, as Nazi forces laid siege to #Leningrad, a group of #SovietBotanists faced an unthinkable choice: eat their life’s work, a rare seed bank, or starve to death. This is the dilemma at the heart of #SimonParkin’s story about the world's first seed bank and its dedicated #botanists."

Played my 1st game of #Botanists and I really loved how movement and tile collection and placement was handled. Lots of tough and interesting decisions but I think the scoring seemed a little dry somehow. Might be something that can be fixed with a small expansion or a minor house rule. I gotta play it again. #bgstats

of Mastodon: I am interested in doing a survey of a shrub here in Pƍneke, in order to publish on it status; no one has surveyed it in this area since 1986. I am unfamiliar with best practices for doing a botanical survey.

Anyone have any good books or guides on how to do this well and thoroughly? Specifically, in two small parks - how do I lay out the ground, count plants, etc.

RT for reach if your followers are or botanists.

#Botanists identify 33 global ‘dark spots’ with thousands of unknown plants theguardian.com/environment/20 paper: nph.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/do

"From a palm tree in #Borneo that flowers underground to a Malagasy #orchid that spends its life growing on other #plants, researchers are still making dozens of #NewSpecies discoveries every year... a new project led by #KewGardens is highlighting parts of the world where botanists should be concentrating their search."

The national flower of #Sweden is the Campanula rotundifolia. In England we know it by its common name of Harebell, but in Sweden it is the Liten BlĂ„klocka, or Little Bluebell. Found these on a forest walk near Uppsala. Botanising in a different country really highlights how Linnaeus’ system of classification revolutionised #botany, as #botanists from all over the world can now be confident that they are talking about the same plant, no matter what it is called in their own locality.

The Guardians of Earth’s Most Grotesque Flowers
atmos.earth/rafflesia-guardian

"A motley crew of #Rafflesia enthusiasts are racing against the clock to save the #CorpseFlower—the largest flower in the world—from #extinction... Each species smells different—#botanists don’t know why—and each #flower is either female or male and needs to bloom simultaneously with its counterpart to reproduce in 24 hours before it starts rotting. Nobody can predict where, when, and if it’ll bloom again after that."
