And I sincerely hope both @EU_Commission and @Bundesverband will actively go after manufacturers that want to deny people their freedom to actually own their devices as per "1st sale doctrine".

Like it's none of Apple's business if someone chose to get a #refurbished display unless they want to fraudulently sell it as a new device and not a replacement - but that's already covered with fraud.

The dosdude1's video about restoring #Apple destroyed A12Z-based Apple Silicon Developer Transition Kit (DTK) brought up some interesting bits, such as that you can interrogate Apple online service for the device serial number and associated device mac addresses (which then can be used to activate the device once correct values are restored to the SYSCFG). If the devices were physically destroyed and scrapped you'd think Apple would also had removed this information from the online service, effectively making it impossible to reactivate them. Most larger businesses use an MDM solution so they can unlock the devices at will; otherwise they're locked with the employee's iCloud ID, which can be released in Find My. @Rmogull And lock+encryption gives peace of mind when devices are stolen. I hate that it's turning Apple devices into e-waste but they'd be even more tempting to thieves if not for #ActivationLock

If Apple allowed repair shops to override #ActivationLock it would destroy the whole #theft deterrent effect. And people are stealing #MacBook and #iPhone like crazy even with the threat of activation lock (and going to crazy extremes to trick users into overriding the lock). I want old Apple products to be recycled and repaired but Activation Lock is a solution to a different problem.

Although I don't use a business #MDM solution, they are able to release #MacBook #ActivationLock if properly configured. Perhaps these piles of MacBooks were purchased by employees and activated with their own iCloud account rather than the business MDM?

But even so, Apple can and will override Activation Lock with proof of purchase. And it's inconceivable that a business wouldn't keep the receipt, even just for tax purposes. I just don't buy the story of piles of non-stolen locked MacBooks.

It’s pretty straightforward to disable #activationlock, which we’ve done when we’ve sold #Apple devices before, and any reputable second hand dealer will ask you to do that if you sell them a Mac or iOS device.

The problem is big users that refresh devices every three to five years and don’t bother to properly unlock the devices before selling on in bulk, the result is they end up in landfill.
