My primary reason is #freedom, not being forced to produce #ewaste. I #reuse older machines which can do their work well.

A week ago, I discovered I could get a Boot ROM shell (and thus code execution) on the QIVICON/Telekom Home Base 2, a discontinued "smart home" appliance. Through some rather fun binary patching adventures, I can now boot the original kernel into a root shell and use it for my own purposes.

How hard would it be to adapt an SD card to fit into an eMMC?
+ both use the same protocol
+ would make life easier for users who don't have microSD slots on their phones, #postmarketos / #mobian / #chrultrabook developers and those who wish to change OS without reflashing
- high-capacity cards, like the 500GB one in my illustration, would probably confuse the bootloaders of most devices
- slight concerns about signal integrity
Same goes for actively adapting SATA/NVME to UFS.
Not an electronics engineer, just some guy with a dream and a crude drawing.

The term Planned Obsolescence suggests the existence of Improvised Obsolescence: arguably a more suitable analogy for Windows 11's official system requirements (TPM2, etc.) telling people to put their "old" computers in the trash.

Huh - power it back up and wont post. Stuff around with it for a bit. Suspect its not detecting the old gpu, put old gpu in the dock and now its not detecting it either.

I never have any luck selling old PCs 2/2
I had an old #gamingpc that I thought I'd dig up and if it was still running I'd sell it. Nope it would turn off a few minutes after turning it on. So I harvested the storage and the GPU and put that GPU in an egpu dock to use on my media minipc.
Had an idea, fired it up and the water cooler aio had failed. It was over heating. Fair enough putting in an old noctua cooler I had laying around and returned its GPU, bought myself an intel arc B580 for the media pc.
India is facing an alarming level of #ElectronicWaste (#EWaste), as it generates the 3rd largest #ewaste in the world, but cannot develop recycling facilities. Dominated by informal recycling facilities, there is a lack of oversight and significant gaps in interstate transportation as well as inventory creation management. India brought Ewaste rules in 2011, upgraded in 2016 and 2022, have not developed the necessary capacity to manage the increasing amounts of e-waste.
Even after a decade of #ElectronicWaste rules, upgraded 3 times, India's #Ewaste still largely mismanaged, few states only have proper recycling facilities, inventories, while majority of states depend on #informal sectors & transporting to other states without any record.
17 states and UTs lack adequate e-#recycling facilities. With the exception of Jammu & Kashmir, there are no #recycling units in any of the UTs. Most recycling units are concentrated in 16 states, including #UP, Gujarat etc.
