Prāv is a messenger which is private, convenient, and free from vendor lock-in.

Prāv combines ideas from like-minded initiatives:
• Like Quicksy, Prāv is easy to join - free to download, no passwords to remember, no need to self-host or pay for an entire instance;
• Like Snikket, Prāv aims to provide a consistent experience across platforms with a single brand.

We want to offer this service under a Multi-State Cooperative Society in India.

The recent SIM binding order by the Indian government is a disproportionate move for its goals. It will erode user privacy, making sharing smartphones impractical, and impact multi-device use, among other things.

As we are based in #India, we will have to abide by the laws and therefore, need to implement it. That said, we don't agree with the order and are preparing to challenge it in Kerala High Court. Learn more by reading our post

#Inktober Day 15, "Ragged". Many Free software projects depend upon donations and funding from external sources to keep the monitor's backlight on and the patches and discussion flowing. Hopefully a cooperative structure like that of Prav brings a more sustainable view of development to the wider ecosystem.

Everyone can try to innovate trying to solicit funds from corporate projects that utilise software licensed under a freedom respecting license, but growing a community around the software project that can sustain itself will hopefully outlast needing to stress about donations 😀 Help with that effort! and make it work, learn more at prav.app/donate

#Inktober Day 13! Organising your friends for a night out for "Drinks" can get really hard, especially when they are not all on #XMPP, but as the classical story goes of a smart crow filling up the pot for water by working pebble by pebble, with each friend you bring about, there more the pot gets filled and the easier it is for a night out!

#Arattai in India is being posed as a local alternative to #WhatsApp, causing people to move...from one walled garden to another.

💬 @rahulporuri from @fossunited who uses #Quicksy to talk to users on #Prav and other #XMPP services, draws attention to the real thing people need to be thinking about: interoperability between different messaging services, so we never have to shift walled-gardens again.

For #Inktober day 11, we have a reminder of how extensible and flexible #XMPP actually is. While people usually think only of private messaging à la #Signal and #Arattai, the same protocol can be used for cases as diverse as social media updates, shared bookmarking, newsfeeds, and more.

Initiatives like #Movim, #Blasta, and #Libervia demonstrate that it's not just a question of being able to communicate among birds, but also among animals, starfish, and maybe even #sting-ray!

@rahulporuri from @fossunited echoed the federation aspect of #XMPP (mentioning how he can communicate with Prav users using Quicksy) in an Indian Express article (indianexpress.com/article/opin…) in which he talked about how moving from one walled garden to another (WhatsApp to Arattai) is a bad move.

For #Inktober Day 7, We have starfish, Just as some starfish lose their arms and can regenerate, so can the #XMPP ecosystem, A collaborative flow of projects that all grow together and as one project might be abandoned another will pick up pace and work, all working off of the same XEP specifications that allow all the projects to come and work together in a network!

Oops- we are a bit late but,

For #Inktober Day 6, "Pierce", Modern communications has brought the ability to communicate to everyone, we have seen the greatest of demonstrations, and the worst of what the world is capable of through various means of communications now.

XMPP being lightweight allows messages to _pierce_ through firewalls, bandwidth restrictions, and or centralised platform shutdowns, you can be sure to rely on your messages going through.

Riding on the back to remove bugs and ticks? We've heard of birds and deer forming this kind of symbiosis. While it's not clear if that bird could be a pigeon, Prāv does have a symbiosis of its own...with the rest of the #XMPP ecosystem!

For #Inktober day 5, we'd like to draw your attention to how we stand on the shoulders of all the other XMPP clients and servers 🏋️

You can use Prāv not just to talk to the 700+ Prāv users but to all the millions of XMPP users across the world! On our side, we try to do our bit to remove bugs and ticks, making the onboarding and user experience smoother so that more people can easily get onto the network. The nice thing about #federation is that though we have numerous apps, we aren't really competition. When one of us gets users, we all win 🪄️

While we'd like everyone to use decentralised messaging standards like #XMPP, there are times when you just want to stay in touch with a friend or group on the #murky lands of the other side. Thankfully we have software like #Matterbridge and #Slidge to bridge your messages across to other platforms—although no guarantees about what happens to your message once it reaches there 🤖️
