Forging coins isn't new - this E-Sylum article covers some of the most ancient forgers: coinbooks.org/v29/esylum_v29n0

I've previously written about my own Augustus Denarius "Fouree" from ancient Rome:

Here's a coin which looks better in hand than in my poor photos. Rome, 336 - 342 AD.

Two soldiers holding spiers and shields, military standard between them.

Issued under a few different emperors, I can get "constans" as the start of the obverse inscription, and between that and the portrait, I'm going with "Constans" but happy to be cvorrected (and happy for a mint if anyone can read that in the exergue of the reverse (under the soldiers)).

@dzedus @richlv @numismatics I will shortly - each fortnight, I put out a short newsletter, really just including interesting numismatic items I've found over the last couple of weeks and things others have shared. One of the items is a single picture of a coin, like this one, without much information, encouraging people to guess what it is. I them write up a piece on the coin on my site - coinofnote.com/ and share the answer in the next newsletter. I'm just writing this one up now, but of course always welcome any extra information (particularly if I get something in my post incorrect!)

Ok #MysteryCoin fans, who can identify this old piece?

It will be newsletter time soon so do subscribe if you're not already and the answer will be in there!

@MAJ1 @numismatics This is true - and I'm running out of room on the bookshelf.... BUT, there are worse problems to have, and if anyone would like to gift it to me, I would be happy to work through the logistical challenges!

Happy Birthday Saint Mary MacKillop! Born 15 Jan 1842 in Melbourne, she was canonised as Australia's first saint in 2010: sosj.org.au/founded-to-respond

I have several medallions though one of the more interesting is this uniface one made into a paperweight on a resin base, which lives on my desk.

@MAJ1 @numismatics It's actually simple to do the currency conversion from Pu to CFA francs: Simply work out the energy and water requirements to create a 6,800 mile equilateral triangle of rubber, (multiply by 8 to get one Pu), convert that to how much bitcoin you'd get for the same energy (about 1.327 BTC I think) then look at the exchange rate of Bitcoin to CFA francs (nearly 53 million CFA = 1 BTC, so... Just over 70 million CFA francs to one Pu.... Plus the exchange fee, and this 56 kilo coin is worth one Pu. I told you this coin was a bargain!

I do like coins which are the outliers - the first, the last, the smallest, or, in this case, the largest. This is the largest silver coin in the world. A 1,750 ounce (Over 56 kilos!), one million CFA Francs coin issued in 2016 by the Ivory Coast. Google tells me the spot price for silver is around 45,000 CFA / oz, meaning the silver content is worth nearly 79 million CFA, making the face value quite cheap.

As we come to the end of the Christmas season, celebrating the birth of Christ, here is a medallion featuring the reason Jesus came to us, from John 3:16. Let's take a couple of verses either side for more context:

John 3:14 "Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up,

15 that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.”

16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son."
