Writing is hard. Building writing tools is fun. Here is my latest obsession: a terminal-based wordprocessor with full themes, custom padding, distraction-free mode, word count & more, built with Python and Textual

Believe it or not, this story about Batteries Included's beloved word processor contains ZERO jokes about . It does take potshots at , however.

@Priyajsridhar
Before the computer, would I have used quill-cut pens, typewriters, or ... ?

I made extra cash in college typing papers ($1/page) on my electric typewriter.

I started college with a manual typewriter, plain paper & no white-out. That didn't last.

I had a [borrowed] WANG word processor when I was in b-school.

Robert Heinlein famously *loved* his word processor--he was an early adopter.

๐Ÿชจ Bank Street Writer on the Apple 2 ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ

This is probably the "Oregon Trail" of word processors, a title which holds a special place in many hearts thanks to childhood exposure. Topping productivity sales charts in the early 80s, towering over the PFS series and accounting software, it clearly had a hold on the adult heart as well. Did it find its way into mine?
Also, Clippy pops in to say hello!

Someone is building a fully native and Gnome HIG compliant Word Processor. It's beta, but it's on Flathub if you wanna try it out, or on Codeberg if you're more build-it-yourself inclined.

It uses Pandoc for file format exporting into ODT, MD, HTML and DOCX, and relies on weasyprint for PDF export. I haven't gotten to play with it yet, but it looks pretty and much more Gnome integrated than other Word Processor software.

If I get a chance, I'll give it a shake down and getting back to you, but it looks promising! Gnome kinda needs a full office suite that's more lightweight and better integrated than LibreOffice, and this looks like a step in that direction.

This time, I examine the first word processor for home microcomputers, Electric Pencil, which worked best if you weren't afraid to put soldering iron to motherboard.

I had been looking for this one for a while - a new copy of the W. W. Norton version of my favorite DOS word processor. It's pretty easy to find the book used, but I have yet to come across a used listing that could tell me if the disks were included.

I don't think version 2.5 is archived anywhere, either. I'm really curious where it lands feature-wise vs Textra 6, the Ann Arbor version.

I read somewhere that LogoWriter was a combination programming language AND word processor for the Apple II, C64, and MS DOS. I got curious and spun up a copy in an Apple II emulator. I figured out how to make the turtle move: FD 50, RT 90, FD 50, etc. How is this also a word processor and what benefit was there in combining Logo with it?

If our softwares were optimized, and if the web wasn't bloated, we could have dirt cheap computers. People already do a lot with RPi Pico.

I think the biggest problem is web. With an RP2040 you can do #gopher, #gemini, #email, #paint and #wordprocessing to say the least. A computer based on this could be very useful for schools. I am being tempted to do a startup or try getting a grant.
