Any form of national ID card has also been widely contested in the United Kingdom since 2015, when it was first proposed in order to comply with EU recommendations. The typical arguments against it were the same Nazi Germany nonsense, accompanied by the uniquely British cry of “I am not a number! I am a free man!” snobbery.

Just as with the ‘grassroots’ campaigns against EU QWAC or DSA, which were inspired and sponsored by US companies not interested in being regulated, the campaign against UK ID was inspired by private companies that profit from processing Britons’ personal data and offering the government ‘identity confirmation’ services on a commercial basis.

One consequence of the absence of a single UK ID was that, when the UK finally decided that some form of ID was required to vote in elections, a ridiculous list of around 20 documents was produced, including bus cards, some of which were acceptable and some of which were not, leading to a very much expected chaos on the polling stations:
