am I crazy thinking that if governments are going to require #ageverification, then they should be obligated to provide an infrastructure for securely verifying age without handing over photos of your ID, etc?

imagine something like OAuth ("Login with Google") but maintained by the authority who already administers your state ID.

i get that this is a technical solution to a political problem, but wish it could be part of the conversation.

I will be interested to see what made "consent" the only available lawful basis for the processing.

Dont get me wrong, I totally support the idea of keeping kids of social media for as long as possible, but the issue with such regulations is always the enforcement.

#ageverification is too much of a privacy and security nightmare as much as it is survaillance of citizens.

Little thought: Maybe educate parents and make them do their job - parenting - again.

Well, for the first time in forever, I checked on my Bluesky while logged out, and it seems that the ban was slightly lifted, as I can actually see the contents without needing something special.

However, when I tried to log in, I saw the accursed, privacy-invasive KWS come up to try and AV me. I’m not going to give my face or ID to a company that keeps all of that on their backend. Privacy invasiveness 100.

My instance is run privately but public ones surely can't ID people, you can't ID everyone on external instances or like the Online Safety Act in the UK does it not matter as we are to small for them to care / they can't stop all access to us.
