Since #ChatGPT came out in 2022, the whole of the #IT industry, and indeed #CS academia too, had gone topsy-turvy.

These days, people are trying to use the #LLM for every problem large and small, even ones that could be solved using well known, traditional mathematical methods. Worse, they are now tossing problems they have never heard of and, hence, do not grasp the true nature thereof, into the gaping mouth of LLM, hoping that this miracle machine could make head-or-tail out of something humans were too lazy, or too incompetent, to analyse and understand.

This is the classic case of the hammer seeing nails all around. It is a waste of resources—humans, machines, electricity, space, money, time. In my own career, I have seen this irrational exuberance several times: the LISP rule-based AI boom; the BP connectionist AI boom; the Web boom; the DotCom boom; the Cloud boom; and now the Transformer boom. Up next, the Quantum boom, maybe?

By all means, surf the Wall Street money wave, if that is one’s wont. But intellectuals must always strive to observe the patterns that repeat, analyse abstractly, synthesise concretely, not succumb to the hammer-nail myopia, and above all never abdicate the duty to #think.

Like why!? There is a small miracle of engineering there and it dies because the original author hasn’t found the time to update them anymore?? Authors who, notably, never asked for a single penny to use these formats. Authors who only increased their own workload by keeping in proprietary.

OptimFROG has a complete SDK with x86 and x86-64 libraries compiled for Windows, Linux, “OS X” and FreeBSD. Someone spent a lot of effort on keeping this proprietary for… no discernible reason at all!? It also hasn’t been updated in close to 10 years, so is probably dead. (We don’t even know if the author is still alive, for that matter…)

And noone else knows what it does and how it works, that just bogs my mind…

So, I’ve reading up on lossless audio compression yesterday and found that based on http://www.audiograaf.nl/losslesstest/revision%206/Average%20of%20CDDA%20sources.pdf these are the most efficient free-to-use lossless audio codecs (in order):

OptimFROG and LA (Lossless Audio) [abandoned]
Monkey’s Audio and TAK (Tom’s verlustfreier Audiokompressor)
MP4 ALS (MPEG-4 Audio Lossless Coding) [abandoned]
WavPack (Wavepack)
FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec)
TTA (True Audio)
ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec)
WMAL (Windows Media Audio Lossless)

Notably that list doesn’t include expensive proprietary codecs like DTS-HD, MLP (Dolby TrueHD), MPEG-4 SLS. All codecs listed above are free-to-use.

What bogs my mind from that list though is two first entries: OptimFROG and LA.

Both were each developed by a single person in their spare time and have to-this-date unbeaten compression ratios in the free-to-use space. Both are also highly proprietary and have never been reverse engineered.
