I just tried to do a #stract search. It's down. I checked #IsitDownRightNow, and they confirm.
Also #CloudFlare, #BarnesAndNoble, #AO3 ... did CloudFlare have such a big outage they took down all those sites?
I'm having okay results from #Stract https://stract.com/
but honestly, I just keep using DDG, and use #UBlockOrigin to automatically delete the AI pest from the page.

Huvuddelen av alternativa (eller vad man ska kalla det) sökmotorer tar hjälp av Google, Bing eller kombinationer av dem. Exempelvis Ecosia, Qwant, Swisscows, Startpage. Tycker det är kul och bra med mer självständighet.

Huh, #Stract is interesting. Open-source, no Silicon Valley VC funding, independent index, power features and customization, no sign of AI to be found (and no discussion of it on the repo). They certainly have my attention.
Oh, and yes, of course it's mostly written in #rust.

@sarahjamielewis ... I started on Netscape. It worked with no muss, no fuss, and then the money guys showed up with new ways to make a buck. It went roaring downhill after that.
I wish that #Mozilla had looked farther outside the box. i.e., #Stract came out as an alternative to Google search and has mentioned their intent to incorporate a non-abusive ad system for revenue. Mozilla partners with them to build/run it and share revenue. Do that for all the alternative browsers, and stay untangled.
I just discovered the Stract search engine. Anyone using Stract? It's Open Source and has some nice features that sound pretty cool (from their Github):
- Keyword search that respects your search query.
- Fully independent search index with our own crawler.
- Advanced query syntax (site:, intitle: etc.).
- DDG-style !bang syntax
- Wikipedia and stackoverflow sidebar
- De-rank websites with third-party trackers
- Use optics to almost endlessly customize your search results.
- Limit your searches to blogs, indieweb, educational content etc.
- Customize how signals are combined during search for the final search result
- Prioritize links (centrality) from the sites you trust.
- Explore the web and find sites similar to the ones you like.
🧵 …schade, sehr schade. Die alternative Datensammlung sparsame Suchmaschine @MetaGer wird leider nicht mehr frei zur Verfügen stehen. Nun gut, dann werde ich mich zukünftig auf @Mojeek, Stract und LibreY als SearXNG Alternative (siehe Links oben) konzentrieren um im Web Seiten und Infos zu finden.

I tried out Stract search, https://stract.com/, it is an open source search engine with its own index. It looks promising although it's index doesn't cover everything yet. But it has a nice explore tool that helps you find sites similar to ones you already like. As an example, from my interest in sociocracy and cohousing I found the cohousing association of america site https://www.cohousing.org/live-it-cohousing/live-it/. Nice!

Die ist dezentral auf unterschiedlichen Servern, die auch ua per @torproject und/oder @i2p erreichbar sind. Es hat eine ähnliche Unterstützung der Privatsphäre im Internet wie @libredirect und sollte deswegen besser als SearXNG / Stract sein (siehe oben).

It still feels really weird to me that the Stract search engine has indexed https://pandorastale.wiki since 2023 December 17, but they still haven't indexed https://minecraft.wiki despite @MinecraftWikiEN@wikis.world being a way bigger and more popular wiki.
Stract doesn't allow site submissions, and I'm not sure how their crawler found our site, or why it hasn't found Minecraft Wiki yet.
Also, they have yet to index https://pandorastale.com, the actual source material for the wiki. What does my fan site have over Xan's actual official comic site?
