I’m wondering how hard is to set up a #Yacy node locally and do my own indexing of the internet. And how acceptable the search results are. I’ve not been using google search for years, and I’ve read and listened here and there that Google search is severely enshittified nowadays.
It would be nice to bring one more thing in house instead of just accepting that things are bad and there’s no option.

Trying for news search engine as well, using #YaCy and https://eldar.cz/news/ aggregator. Relevancy while search is not great. The pseudo-pagerank ("citation rank") doesn't work that much and is so heavy for computation that I switched that off:

Vector search would certainly be a big help. #solr already have that, but not implemented in YaCy so far.

I've checked on #YaCy from time to time because the project seemed very interesting but the resources (disk space and memory) too big for it to be run on cheap hardware as a hobby. I don't know of any other #OpenSource (optionally) #distributed #searchEngine with #webCrawler included (independent of Google and co., unlike metasearch engines).
I thought maybe somebody will rewrite it in Rust or something, but no luck so far. There was an announcement of significant optimisations made once, but the resources needed seem to be huge still.
Sadly, the focus nowadays seems to be on adding #AI to it. I guess I'll wait until the bubble is gone. 😕

@JohannesStarke Das "Rauschen" hat auch Nachteile, weil wenn zu viele Anfragen von einer IP kommen, machen manche Suchdienste dicht. Damit werden eventuell die Suchergebnisse nicht mehr so gut. Muss man immer abwägen. Wenn du noch mehr basteln willst, hänge eine #YaCy Instanz hinter dein SearXNG 🙂

once you have your index going v easy to backup with solr dump or you can just copy entire folder and move it - will run anywhere, it does use java and sort of resource intensive but if you have time it doesn't matter what you run it on #yacy #se

#yacy I now started using my own local search engine by using the fantastic free software of yacy.net on the home linux server. I also started indexing other webpages of interest. 😏

Mastodon is my main source of interesting new weblinks. I wondered if one can extract and save all that links to file.

So, I made a #shell script that can extract all weblinks from a Mastodon user's outbox, basically using #curl, #sed, #jq, and #grep.

Well, I was just shared a new way of browsing the internet in a peer to peer form. Basically, some sort of decentralized alternate form of browsing the web instead of using corporate search engines such as #Google or #Bing. #YaCy

@rapha3l Ich bekomme den Port 8090 irgendwie von außen nicht freigeschaltet. Ich habe die Freigabe im Router (Fritz) vorgenommen und die Firewall freigeschaltet. Offensichtlich bin ich gerade zu doof dafür. Irgendetwas mache ich falsch oder habe vergessen. Irgendeine Windows Kacke mit Sicherheit. Ich muss endlich komplett weg davon. #yacy
