I didn't know that Canada geese & mallards ate fish until I witnessed it the 1st time. Shad are too big to swallow so they shred them w/ their bills. They frequently let go of the fish to get a better grip so theft attempts are constant.

I'm a huge big fan of gulls & came across this young gull (ID app suggests an American herring gull juvenile) w/ really gorgeous plumage while hanging out w/ the migratory eagles on Tuesday.

It's astonishing to watch a large bird like a bald eagle spot fish, hover, & turn on a dime above a relatively small area open water. Especially given the large # of eagles we have right now in addition to the large # of waterfowl.

A lifer for me.

When the river freezes, I often find less common (for me) species mingled w/ the Canada geese/mallards at the dam. That's why I (unlike sane people, lol) am a fan of cold winters 🤷‍♂️ 🥶.

It takes 4-5 yrs for a bald eagles to get their adult feathers. Adult eagles are gorgeous birds but juvenile eagles like this one from Monday have incredible plumage as well 👍.

Subzero windchill today. Stopped by the river briefly on Friday. Found 7-8 bald eagles fishing in the open water next to the dam. Gonna have to see if I can't get some pics this afternoon.
